Hiya,

Just wondering how other people went with the afterpains?

For my 1st DD I remember them, and they were like period pains, but with my last DS the pains were alot stronger and like being in labour again!

Everyone kept telling me that the afterpains get worse with each pregnancy, which I thought was awfull as everything is more stretched so it should be easier!

I was super dosing with raspberry leaf, for the last week of my pregnancy to try and bring on bubs and to have a short labour and am thinking now maybe that has also made the after pains alot stronger?

let me know how you went

Monica,

I didn't know til my third child that the pains get worse each time. (Old wives tale is that it is payback for not having your period for nine months! ;) ).
It is because your uterus has stretched so much that it is trying to shrink back. If you are breastfeeding, they can feel even more intense but for a shorter length of time. Take paracetemol if they are really bad.

All the best with the new addition.

Hi,
With my first 3 children the after pains were ok. On the 4th I gave birth using a little bit of gas and no extra pain relief, by that night the after pains were so bad I was crying and needed to use pethadine.(strange as I didn't need it for the birth) it really was worse than labor. With no. 5 the pains were bad but manageable with hot packs. I also drank rasberry leaf tea like it was the only thing on earth to drink with my 4th but not the others. I don't know if it did make a difference. My labour was only 3 hours long. I have used ras. leaf with all of them but not the same quantity as no.4.
