View Full Version : Panadol when teething?

Just wondering how often you give your bubs panadol/nurofen when they are teething?
Blair has gotten 2 teeth in the last 3 weeks and the second one especially has had DH and I reaching for the panadol every couple of nights recently.
He is having the Brauers teething relief before each feed and this helps heaps, but doesn't seem to be enough some nights.
This morning, Blair was so upset, crying and shoving everything in his mouth that nothing would console him. I tried cool teething rings, bonjela, a cold wet flannel and even a firm gum massage. After 45 or so mins I gave in and gave him panadol (something I have NEVER done during the day before) and he calmed almost instantly and finally went down for his nap shortly after. He hasn't needed it again today and has been back to his normal self.
Am I doing the right thing for him? Is there anything else I should do? I don't like the use of panadol for myself even, and it is making me wonder if I am a good or bad mummy for giving it to him??? Any help would be appreciated!
I went to my DR yesterday about this and she said it was fine to give her (my DD) some baby panadol in the day after trying everything else.
Today we did teething ring, flannel, gum massage hot bath and then finally baby panadol she just wouldn't settle so after her hot bath and a feed she went down. I think it's OK in smallish dosages just not all the time :)

I'll give a minimum dose when everything else fails.

Is it wrong to give Panadol during the day?
I don't like to give my girls medicine if there's no need, but if DD2's teeth are bugging her, I give her Panadol. You're not to exceed 4 doses in 24 hours, but can give it 4 hours apart. I space it to 6 hours apart, and try to time it so she can have it just before bed. And that's only if she needs it.
IMO, Panadol is perfectly fine to give at any time of the day.
I figure that I would take a dose of panadol if my teeth were hurting, so it only seems logical that my child should have a dose of panadol too if their teeth are hurting.
If it only takes one dose every now and then to help them through the horrid teething time, then for me, I have no guilt in giving it.
We suffer too much guilt as parents for so many other things, that I would hate to feel guilty that my children were in pain and I did nothing about it.

Thanks for your responses. I don't feel too bad now as he seems to be over the worst of it (for now anyway).
As I said, I don't take panadol myself as I prefer to use other methods first. I guess my biggest worry is that if I give it to him too much, over time it might begin to lose it's effectiveness. Can that happen?
I don't think so...I have been taking panandol as an adult for years, and its still effective for me. My mum also says that she gave me panadol as a baby/child when needed.

The dosage on the bottles of Panadol are very safe.
There are times that one of the boys have had a temperature and I've given Panadol only to find that their temp is back up within the 4 hours.
I spoke to their doctor about this and he was the one who told me that the dosage on the bottles is low and you can even give a higher dose.

My little grub had a really hard time with top teeth and eye teeth, so the doctor told me to get him some painstop. It's not highly reccommended for those under one, but he was 10.5 months and the weight of a 1yo. panadol does nothing for him. To get temps down i have to use nurofen, as he burns up with teeth. (yeah for us we've just had 8 weeks of virus, bronchitus and 6 teeth!!!gotta love it!!) But i only use the painstop as a last resort, otherwise BRAUERS,BRAUERS, BRAUERS and nurofen. and lots of cold fruits and icebolcks. i don't cut the top off them till he's had a really good chew on it, cos he won't have a bar of teething rings etc..
So glad you wrote this post as I am having similar dramas.
Will is teething and they are his first teeth. It has been going on for a couple of weeks now and I find he is going to bed with a dose of Nurofen almost every night (only one). I am using the Brauer's during the day and haven't had to give him anything else yet. I did take him to the doctor and she said he had a sore throast as well (that was Monday the 24th). I worry a lot about giving him pain relief so much but he is just so out of sorts and the disrupted nights sleep knocks us both around!
My question is how long will this go on for? I can see the teeth but they haven't come up yet. Am I hurting him by giving him so much pain relief?

i don't think it is doing any harm, the way i see it is 6that i'm helping to relieve the pain and fever. If it helps him sleep and be a little less cranky then i'm all for it. When he got his top teeth all together over 3 weeks, he couldn't eat much and his throat got blistered , giving him panadol just aggravated it as it hurt when he had it.
