i have been doing some research on DS's asthma medications and i have found that predmix oral liquid can cause severe infections of live vaccines, i was planning on getting ds the chicken pox vaccine but now i am unsure. he doesnt take predmix everyday.its there as a emergency use type thing the dr included it in ds's asthma plan.

i am just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with predmix and live vaccines?

Use in Children

PredMix Oral Liquid should be used in children only under your doctor's supervision.

If possible, children should not be exposed to common childhood diseases such as chicken pox or measles while they are taking PredMix Oral Liquid. They may suffer from more serious attacks of these illnesses if such exposure occurs.

Children should not be vaccinated with 'live' vaccines against common childhood illnesses while they are taking PredMix Oral Liquid, as this may result in severe attacks of these illnesses.

How the vaccine works
The chickenpox vaccine is used in children aged from 12 months or older, adolescents and adults. It contains a weakened form of the chickenpox (varicella-zoster) virus and works by causing the body to reproduce its own antibodies to protect against the disease.from :http://www.disability.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Chickenpox_vaccine?OpenDocument
so it does contain a part of the virus which means it is a live virus vaccine yeah?

predmix IS a danger when having chicken pox vaccine

i was given a "risk" sheet when i had my eldest done. (she is at high risk of reaction to vaccination)

she had to be off predmix all together. ( something we often use for problems related to the pneumococcal disease she had)

they will not do the c/p vax if your son is on it.

they will also not give the c/p vax 1 month either side of any other "live" vaccine.

i made an apt with the dr just to talk about the vaccine- i didnt even take the kids with me- so i had a chance to talk about it and ask any questions.

when the time came for the vax my DR was prepared.

he took my kids temps before giving them the vaccine.

for my eldest, he had a adrenalin ready and a nurse taking ten min obs.

she was fine, had no reaction at all.

talk to your DR about all the options available, all the risks and how it can be done in the safest way for your child.

from what i have read both catching it and the vaccine can cause a really bad case of chicken pox.

i cant its for his asthma. its part of his asthma plan for when his ventalin fails to relive an attack. so not having it would be very risky incase he does have an attack.

edited to add: the vax doesnt stop kids from getting chicken pox all together. there is is still asmall chance they will get it but ti wont be as bad.
