Just letting you know for those of you who use this or plan to use it...

James, over the past month, has been become increasingly upset, unsettled and eventually waking every 1-2 hours at night. At my wits end I called the CYH nurse and we narrowed it down to the 6 month follow-on formula that he was on. She said that is a total gimmick and is unnecesary. It is higher in protein and the milk curd isnt as processed and delicate as the normal baby formula and gives babies upset tummies. Turns out she was right and James is back to normal and right as rain at night.

Just letting you know if any of you are experiencing these problems with your bubs and happen to be using follow-on formula, you might want to consider going back to the normal one and see what happens.

Yeah, I've heard that happening also. I used Karicare Follow-On and had no problems. I think that is the only whey dominant Follow-On formula. The others are casean dominant I think. It is a bit of a gimmick. It's got a bit of extra iron in it and that's about it. I really only used to buy it when it was on special.

Its only unsuitable for when your child has no reason to step up.
In our case when Boof hit 7mths he was very unsettled on the normal formula & was wanting to feed every 2hrs again so stepping up meant he was more satisfied & a happier bub all round. This isnt the case for every baby.
Just as not every toddler needs toddler formula but in many cases again like mine its a life saver when you have a child who wont drink cows milk nor always eat his full meals.
You have to do whats right for your own bubba !

Im finding this really interesting!
Just this week, my bubs turned 6 months. I was due to buy a new tin of formula so got the 'Follow On'. I mainly breast feed with one bottle a day so it takes me a while to go through a tin. I first gave it to him on Monday and for the last few nights he has woken up a couple of times. This is really unusual for him as he has been a fantastic sleeper and going right through since about 3.5 months. I've given him the follow on tonight and he's now asleep - it will be interesting to see how he goes tonight. We may be swiching back tomorrow!

I have had no probs with DD changing over to the follow on formula (we use S26). I was comparing the tins and the info on them and I noticed that along with it claiming slightly higher ammounts of Iron and a few other things, the size of the scoop was slightly bigger too. So now I'm wondering if the S26 formulas are the exact same stuff, just a slightly bigger ammount of powder in each bottle.

lol!!! Whoopsie!!!

I don't there is any reason to rush bubs on to follow on the day they turn six months. My Midwife told me similar things about it too.
I didn't change Xav onto it until he was nearly 8months, for the same reason Allyoo did and that was to fill his tum up more as he was getting wakeful and hungry at night again.
The follow on isn't alot different nutrition wise, but it's richer and more satisfying for older bubs. Perhaps bubs who are unsettled on it aren't ready for it yet???

I agree there is alot of hype over changing up to the next level of Formula, it's the same with toddler formulas, which aren't really necessary either unless kids are lacking something in their diet.
I give Xav it a couple of times a week now (15months old) but only beause he refuses to eat meat of any kind :shame:
