My little man is now 5 1/2 months old and has mastered rolling over to the point where he wont lay on his back at all. I put him in his cot for a nap and he will roll over even after tucking him tight and all he does is cry, he wont sleep on his side or tummy. My CHN said he would be fine sleeping on his tummy during ther day if i kept an eye on him, I am trying to encourage this as he has a pretty bad flat spot on the side of his head. Any tips on how to encourage him to sleep on his tummy would be appreiciated (SP).

i would just let him sleep however way he is comfy. my ds took to sleeping on his tummy he was the opposite to your ds lol and i wanted to keep on his back lol you could try tummy time when he is awake so he is used to then settling him on his tummy for a nap. not sure, i had the opposite problem lol

He is constantly on his tummy when he is awake, i cant get him to stay on his back but when it comes time to sleep if he rolls onto his tummy he just cries, if he falls asleep whilst i am carrying him i can lay him on his tummy when i put him in his cot and he will sta asleep like that but wont self settle on his tummy. I dont have a problem with him just sleeping on his back but he wont stay that way to self settle.
I just dont know what to do.

Have you tried patting his bum? DD started tummy sleeping pretty early, but even before that I settled her on her side by bum patting. You might not want to start that habit though. I've described my technique before on here, somewhere...

my ds always wanted to sleep on his tummy, somehow he managed to roll himself over when he was only a couple months old, so since then i've tried to get him to sleep on his back but he just won't!
but if he really wont go to sleep no matter how tired he is (which he does often) i found just patting him on his bum/back helps. and if you have like a reclining/rocking arm chair ( or even just any sort of rocking chair) then i'll sit on that with him on his belly laying across my legs with his head resting on the arm of the chair and just rock gently and pat his bum. that often works really well!

my son also had a very distinctive flat spot on the side of his head and our CHN suggested having his cot against one wall and hang toys off the other side and put him in it so that when he looks at the toys he's not going to be laying on the flat side.
if that makes sense?? didnt work for us coz he just rolled over and turned around and did whatever he wanted baisically.

if you need me to explain better just pm me. bit sleepy at the moment sorry! lol

My little boy loves sleeping on his tummy too, but so far is happy to sleep on his back at night (he hasnt mastered rolling yet).

I lay him down for tummy time on his play mat, and he will fall asleep there....have you tried getting your little boy to sleep on his tum in places other than his cot? :)

Goodluck!

Thanks for all the suggestions i will give them all a go, something will have to eventually work. I am taking him to the child health nurse next week about his head, i am pretty worried about it as his ears and forehead and cheekbone are all pushed forward on that particular side aswell.
Thanks again for the suggestions, dont know what i would do without this site.
