View Full Version : Cows Milk vs Formula
Hi There
How long do I keep my 15 month old son on Formula before changing him on to cows milk full time? Is there any benefit keeping him on Formula?
I would appreciate any help in this as I really don't know and cannot find the answer anywhere.
Hi Trina
From all the info that I've seen, read and heard, it is OK to put your child onto cows milk full time at 12 months old. I don't believe that there's any benefit in leaving him on formula, unless he's got dairy issues (and I'm sure there's cheaper options for dealing with an allergy).
BTW I think those toddler formulas (for the over 12 months) are a load of rubbish also (just another trap set to make you spend more money  ).

I agree, over 12 months you can switch to just cows milk instead of formula. I was told by a nurse that there was no need to switch from an infant formula to a toddler one. And I know, in my head, that it's just a lot of marketting... But... DD seems to eat so little and is small for her age, so I am still giving her toddler formula just in case it really does give her a boost. If I could just find vitamins for under 3's I'd give her those instead and switch to cow's milk.

Hi :)
Both my girls went on to cows milk at 12 months old and they have been fine, they had no allergies/reaction to milk at all but I did it slowly by starting 1/4 milk to 3/4 water then 1/2 to 1/2 etc in case they had a reaction to the milk but they were fine :)

My daughter is 19 months and has toddler formula. She is a very picky eater and doesn't drink much water on her own so we find that the formula is a good way for her to get the vitamins and water she should be getting. She also has eczema which dairy seems to make worse. It may well be a marketing ploy but is a good subsitute for kids who can't have dairy.
I think they are over that 12 month mark is when to start on milk in small doses to start to see their reaction to it.
Hi,
My 3 year old nephew sounds a lot like the kids here. He was always a bigger kid(taller), but never really seemed to eat a lot, but lately my sil has started giving him mulitvitamins in a chewable tablet and he has started to eat them out of their house. I know that there is a multivitamin called incremin ( i use to work at a chemist b4 my DS 11months old), not quite sure at what age. But if it makes them eat more and not soo fussy, try it.
Anyway, that was my 2 cents worth!!!
Cheers
I always thought that formula was cow's milk based??? Is this true???
