View Full Version : Family food which includes a fussy toddler
Help, we are so bored with what we are eating. We seem to eat alot of "G" rated stuff obviously for DDs benefit as I hate cooking seperate meals.
I have been so slack with this so its become my new years resolution. We have the same things over and over again :hair:
So, what do you cook that the whole family love? DD (2) won't eat wraps or really fiddly things so I am looking for easy eating things I guess. Help! Any suggestions would be great
ETA, I should add that some of the things we have too often are spag bol, sausages, pasta bake, rissoles and vegies to name a few.

Hmmm.... I've never really pandered to DD's fussiness so if there's a meal I've cooked that she doesn't like, then she has bread and butter LOL
Not liking fiddly meals... can you make it "self serve" so everyone can make/assemble their own wraps and your DD can just eat the ingredients on their own? This works great for tacos, or even mixed platters of crisp steamed veg, cubed meats, pasta spirals, fruit, cheese etc.
We do things like mango chicken curry, cold pasta and tuna salads, steamed fish (swordfish is really kid friendly as it has absolutely no bones and is fairly mild in flavour), lamb cutlets (meat with a handle! LOL), homemade vegetable or pumpkin soup with toast soldiers. Last week waqs fish pie after I left a whole weeks worth of meat in teh car after doing the shopping. You line a pie dish with mashed spuds, then add a mix of bechamel sauce, boiled eggs, parsley and a tin of fish (salmon or tuna), then top with more mashed spuds and bake for 10 - 15 mins to heat through.
Thanks you've given me heaps of ideas already!
If DD doesn't eat whats put in front of her there is no second option so thats no drama. By G rated I meant things like hot curries and spicy things moreso. Although we did have burritos last night and she had a smidge of the chilli mince (was fairly mild), she did pick at the salad and ate a tortilla by itself so at least she ate hey! I think I just have to perservere with the fiddly stuff until she gets into it more.

I think lots of people want to change eating habits this year, and not just because they want to "lose weight", but like you, because they feel they've become slack - I know I have! My goal is one new recipe each week (something we have never eaten before), and to find each week's recipe, I trawl through the selections at taste.com.au (I've planned a few weeks at a time, so the two hours I spent searching I only need to do once a month) Apparently, everyone has about 20 meals they cook, so I wrote out my list, and then filled out a calendar so no meal is repeated in the month (actually three weeks at the moment) - been at it since last Saturday, and it's working a treat so far!
Good luck getting out of your slump!

We discovered my girls absolutely LOVE Thai beef salad (or our version of it) only they have it without the dressing. I quite like it without the dressing too or sometimes just sprinkle a touch of any salad dressing. It's really easy.
Rump steak (with fat cut off) with Thai seasoning sprinkled on it and cooked with just a spray of oil in the frypan. Then when cooked, slice into pieces. Then salad and noodles.
When dishing up do the salad, then noodles on top and steak.
One time I made it DH was late coming home from work and I had his meat and noodles in the fridge. I went to pull it out when he came home to heat up and discovered the girls had stolen most of it.
