View Full Version : Bio-Oil and Vitamin A?
Hi all,
Well I have been reading up on stretchmarks etc and have read that a lot of you recommend Bio-Oil. I just did a search on it as I was interested in purchasing some and found that the list of ingredients include Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A). Aren't pregnant women supposed to avoid Vitamin A
Hi There..
I use Bio-Oil.. I'm pretty sure it's safe to use throughout Pregnancy.
I would hope that they would have a warning on the bottle if it was unsafe.
I'm pretty sure they would make it clear if it was unsafe even in the slightest as they would be in alot of trouble if they didn't.
I also found this in a Bio-Oil catalogue...
Stretch Marks
To help reduce the possibility of stretch marks forming during periods of rapid change, massage Bio Oil regularly into the areas most susceptible to stretch marks.
During pregnancy massage abdomen, hips, breasts and upper thighs once or twice daily from the early months of pregnancy.

Hi, I used bio oil throughout my pregnancy and it didn't hurt my bubs (unless it causes inability to sleep:laughing: )
It didn't prevent me from getting strechmarks but I have been using it twice a day since DS was born and it has defnitely made them less red and noticable.
I'm pretty sure it's Retin A you can't use, not vitamin A. Either way, they wouldn't reccomend it for pregnancy if it wasn't safe.
Don't drink it and you should be allright. :D
I really think stretch marks are something which you are genetically disposed to or not.
I'd go the good old cheap olive oil!
There are a lot of people making a lot of money out of 'preventing stretchmarks'

totally agree. i used palmers cocoa butter blah blah stuff for stretch marks, and i still got HORRID stretch marks, but then my poor little stomach was about to pop! so its understandable!
It is mostly genetic predisposition that leads to stretchmarks.
That said, I didn't just take a punt on me getting mum's good genes (she has almost none after 4 kids). So I used almond oil. A $10 bottle lasted the entire pregnancy and then some.
I have a total of about 6 stretchmarks on my hips, so whether it was genes or the almond oil I'm not 100% sure, probably both.
Well I am not convinced of the luck of the genes thing. I was SURE I would get terrible stretch marks because I have them from puberty, so I used bio oil every day, twice a day, from 12 weeks and I don't have one new one and the puberty ones have faded a bit.
So I am not taking any chances and I still think its the bio oil, I really do. I slather it on though, I am up to about my 7th or 8th bottle of it and I use it twice a day and massage it in and let it soak in.
I guess I will never know if it was the bio oil or for some reason i got luckier in pregnancy than in puberty.

I agree totally! I think these companies get people with false promises and expensive prices....

or you'll be unlucky like me and they'll show up once bub is born (I still lucked out and didn't get many and they never were red...on my belly anyhow.)
Thanks for your replies ladies. I am not too worried about the stretchmarks, but that said if I can do something that makes me feel like I am helping I will feel better than doing nothing.
Cheers :D
