Well it is only day 2 back at uni for the semester and I don't think I'm going to make it. I don't know how I'm going to get through all the work I have to do. I am only doing part-time and only have 4 subjects left to get my first degree. For my electives for my degree I'm doing psychology subjects so I can go on and do a psychology degree starting in 2nd year. Well yesterday first lecture back was statistics and then had a 3hr tutorial on statistics this afternoon  . I am so confused  I don't think I can do it. I am feeling totally overwhelmed and don't think I'll be able to pass statistics...but I need it for psychology :( . Think I might have to admit I can't do this and I've bitten off more than I can chew

Hi there
I know how you feel, perhaps you have bitten off more than you can chew or perhaps you haven't.
I think you can do it!! You have successfully come this far and all you have to do is take advantage of all the support available to you and devise a plan of action. Allocate time after the kiddies go to bed at night or whenever works for you and try your best.
I found that to have a couple of text books on the statistics handy can help. Some texts are more academically written than others and by reading a particular topic from a different text book can sometimes be a little easier to understand.
I found statistics to be one of the hardest subjects but if you can get your hands on past exam papers you can't really go wrong, it doesn't change much from year to year.
To get this far is a huge achievement. It is closer than alot of people ever get to achieving their dream. You can do it.
Best of luck :hugs:

Studying while trying to raise a family and cope with other stresses in life is difficult. Are you doing all 4 of your remaining subjects right now? Because I'd suggest dropping back to only 1 or 2 at a time. I know it means taking longer to complete your courses, but it gives you more time to devote to each subject and will reduce your load. I've been trying to complete a uni program part time and have just decided to apply for a deferrment for this semester - I've just faced up to my depression and have to admit that I can't cope with studying even 1 course right now. Hopefully I'll pick it back up in 2007. I'm hoping the uni will be understanding about it.
If you do decide to stick it out this semester then I'd suggest talking to your professors and tutors early on if you're having trouble with a course or assignments. Your tutor may even be able to set you up with another student in the class or a past student for some individual tutoring.

My advice is stick in there and give it all you can. I am also at uni studing 3 subjects externally this term and it can be very challenging. I send my 10mth old to day care 4 days a week so i can get through the work. I hadn't studied externally before last term and i admit didn't fully understand what i got myself into and failed both subjects as i wasn't prepared. This term i am going along great and am looking forward to the finish line (in a few years).
Hang in there and i'm sure you can get extra support from your tutors if you ask. All mine are more than willing to help out when needed. Also study groups are a great option, talk to your tutor, someone else maybe in the same boat and you can help each other.
Good luck

I have been having similar feelings all year - I just started a PhD at a new uni, & I hate the topic I picked & I just hate uni for the first time ever, it is just too much trouble and hard work :ecomcity:
My female supervisor (also a mum to a young child) said to me that as women we've got to believe in ourselves, & sometimes it is easy to run ourselves down.
I guess I am a perfectionist over-achiever & I'm not as bright as I'd like to be :D However, other people seem to get through with a more relaxed approach, so my mantra this semester is to only do the work necessary, & only worry about that work, not about next year or the year after or my career etc etc, until I get a bit more balance back & start loving it again.
I hope this helps a bit!
I completed statistics for psychology last year and last semester I completed 3rd year psychology stats! YOU CAN DO IT. i'm a single mum to a 4 1/2 year old and if I can do it anyone can.
Feel free to PM me with any questions and I will do my best to help. What university are you at?
"Make stats your friend" is my saying (I actually got it from a friend of mine). Don't feel too scared about it.
Good luck!!!!

This is me to a T right now actually.
I did fine with my undergrad, but then i had more help and only 1 child.
I really struggled and believe that I took a beating both physically and emotionally last semester, in my first (of only 2 part-time) semesters to complete my Grad Dip in Psychology.
Unfortunately as it is a postgrad, I believe they won't offer me deferment as an option, so i may have to withdraw. But I learnt last semester that you have to pick your battles.
I think my health and sanity, which ultimate affects my family is more important than my studies for now. So I will leave it and worry about it when i do have the support and the kids are a little more independent (hopefully next year).
Good luck, but a word of advice, don't over push yourself. Be realistic with your expectations and your goals. I thought I could do anything, just because I managed it for my undergrad, and got a rude awakening last semester.:banghead:
I'm with Martha... lighten your load if you want to keep working towards the end of ur degree. Cos a bad grade will make moving on to your second degree harder.
By the way, I believe the stats has a lot to answer for my stress last semester. :devil6:
You'd think after 4 years of stats, i'd be immune to it.
