Hi All,

I've got bubs 1st b'day coming up next month and am making him a no. 1 covered in blue butter cream and other decorations made from soft icing. I practised this morning with the butter cream and when I put blue food colouring into it, it turned green instead of blue! It was because the butter in the icing mixture is yellow. Anyone have any ideas on how to make the icing mixture with a white base? Do they sell white butter? I don't want to use normal icing as it won't look right..it has to be the butter cream.

Also, where can I find the soft icing - the one you can roll around like a soft dough and make shapes out of? What is it actually called in the supermarket?

Thx in advance

Hmmm....was the butter creamed enough - it will usually turn lighter when it is creamed the right amount?

Is that other icing called fondant? I think it is in the section with the cake decorating supplies like hundreds and thousands, and the icing sugar and stuff. Don't hold me to that though. :o

You need to use real butter and not margarine and beat it realy well!

Failing that, from a really good cake deco shop you can get "wilton butter favouring" - it's a cear essence butter flavour which could be added to clear vegetable shortening to make an icing. For a basic buttercream though, this shouldn't be necessary. You could try sourcing some food colouring gels or powders, as opposed to the liquids. They are much more intense in colour.

Can't help with the blue icing but the other icing you can find in Woolies and Coles. The brand name is Orchid or Orchard (preg head can't remember). I used it to decorate my DD 1st birthday cake and recommend using icing sugar mixture when rolling it out so it doesn't stick.

If you want a yummy frosting that you can colour try the Betty Crocker Vanilla icing in a can. You can get it at most super markets and it colours well.
