How long does it take for the HCG to start dropping after a miscarriage?
I miscarried on Friday night (at 10 weeks), and to prove to myself that it was all over, did one of my left over PG tests yesterday, expecting to see only a faint line, but the HCG came up very very dark, in like 5 secs. The last time I had done one was on Friday and it took about a minute to come up medium in colour. Is this my body flushing out the hormone? Does anyone know how long it takes to start dropping back to normal?
Thanks
Twinkles
Hey twinkles, Im sorry about you loss.:hugs:
I remember reading it takes a few weeks , just can't remember where i read it.
I had a m/c 2 weeks ago, i know around 5 weeks i had milk in my breasts (TMI) and i know the milk has to absorb back into the body. I want to do a hpt to know its all out of my system, but im too scared incase it comes up positive.
If you have flick through some of the pages in this section you might find a post about it.

Hi Adria,
Thanks for that, I'll do some searching and see what I can find. I'll get some finality tomorrow as they're doing an ultrasound because of the infection, but sometimes even one day of the minute possibility (that it was a twin (hiding in that large clot) that died or some such 1 in a million possibility) can be really hard.
I certainly wasn't expecting the test to come up so quickly it was a real shock, and it ignited that tiny glimmer of hope, which I know is completely unrealistic, nigh on impossible given how much and what I passed, I am a seriously crazy hormonal woman  :banghead:
The milk coming in must have been hard :hugs: I hope you find the strength to do the test when you are ready.
Thanks for the support

hi how are you,
i am so sorry to hear of your loss:hugs:
i too had a mc on 6th july which was a thursday i then done a test on the sat morn and was still positive and come up stongly strait away.
i then went for a blood test on the next tuesday 5 days post mc and my levels were still very high but slowly coming down, i then had to go back the next tuesday 12 days post mc and they were nearly down to normal and id be right just to be sure i did a test and it was negative so that was 13 days so id be assuming they would now be ok
i was only 7 weeks so yours may be a bit longer to come down as you were a little further on than me
i hope that helps, i hope you are going well:hugs:

Hi,
I'm going ok, not great, but ok. I am looking forward to the final closure of the ultrasound tomorrow.
I am sorry to hear of your loss a few weeks ago. I hope you are going ok? :hugs:
Thanks for the info, for some reason I thought it would drop really quickly, but I guess our bodies know what they are doing. At least I know it's normal now :)
Take care

Thanks for the info, it's good to know I'm normal (mostly:rolleyes: ) and thanks for the hugs too - need them!
I had my ultrasound yesterday with a very lovely older gentleman whose wife had had also had a miscarriage at around the same time and he was amazingly supportive and informative too. Apparently, though my uterus is mostly clear, I have alot of tissue left around my endometrium which is the main cause for the continued bleeding, also apparently I haven't yet passed the egg 'shell' - can't remember the exact name for it and that could be what's holding up the HCG. He says he's hoping that's all it is, cause he says there still could be a second (this time) ectopic pregnancy, causing the ouchies and bleeding too:eek: I'd rather not think about that possibility! Apparently I have a retroverted uterus too, which could account for the reason it took so long to get pregnant each time - good to know.
I am seeing my doc first thing in the morning and he'll let me know if I need a D & C - what are they like anyway, just in case? Do you go under a local? Do you have to stay in for obs after?
Take care

Big hugs to you, hope all is well. They put you to sleep while they do a D&C. :hugs:

Hi Kristy,
Thanks, I wasn't sure, cause everyone talks about a 'quick D&C' but with usually very little additional detail.
Take care

I don't think the operation takes that long, it is quite straightforward just a delicate thing to have to do I guess. You will be fine. :hugs: I was a little achy afterwards but that comes with the dialation I guess. Some panadol and neaurofen works well, and a nice sleep.
Hey twinkles,
Im glad you were given some supportive information, i think it helps when doctor or professional has been through it.
If you look at the last page of Blighted ovum, i spoke about all the negetives of d and c..... which isn't the nicest things to read. Also read the sections on page 2 called "D&C" and "what to expect with d and c" The procedure takes about 20-30mins and you do have to fast from about midnight the night before.

Hi Adria,
Thanks for the info, considering what I have read I am very glad I didn't opt for a D&C, though I have been offered a 'just in case one' as I am still bleeding. I think it would be even more traumatic for me, I can't imagine having my baby taken from my unnaturally, even though it was painful to go through a miscarriage, it has helped me to cope, having experienced it, and seeing the baby too. I know it was inevitable that way and guess there was real closure. Having said that, I am looking at this from a point of view of someone who has not had a D&C, nor really needed one.
Thank you so much for all your support, it has been greatly appreciated:thumbsup:
