I am wanting to start using cloth nappies. I'm sick of disposables and the impact they are having on the environment and my bank account. I have no idea about modern cloth nappies, it's all very confusing. I hear words like bamboo or hemp and I'm even more confused. Help please.....:D

You don't really need special nappies for boys, but you might find that a pocket nappy style suits you, because you can choose where the most padding goes (they're shaped like a disposable and you put the "stuffing" inside through a hole at the back - very easy).
There are some pictures of different kinds of nappies here: http://www.darlingsdownunder.com.au/categories.php
I don't have any links to this company btw (haven't even bought anything from them!) but I think their pictures are the nicest. :)
i have a baby boy - well toddler now.
pocket nappies are good because you can boost them at the front, back or through the middle. but I found they were more prone to leaks, esp. overnight. They are great being convenient and fast drying, and customisable, but overboosting them in the front can tend to lead to more leaks because the 'seal' around the legs and tummy won't be great.
a lot of fitted nappies can be boosted more at the front than the back or through the middle. Baby BeeHinds are one that is designed to have this flexibility. Fitted nappies with boosting sewn into the nappy as well as a lay in booster means that you can front boost as you need to as well, and almost all fitted nappies allow for this, they just vary in terms of their flexibility!
Can I suggest this website?

OCN is an awesome resource, and the FAQs are a great, non commercial place for you to start!

I want to change too. I was just wondering you if you can get them from target or big w? I know it is highly unlikely but I just want to get 1 to try it before I buy them.

No unfortunately you can't get them from places like that. Perhaps have a look for someone in your area who uses cloth who may be able to show you the nappies they use.;)
I knew it would be wishful thinking.
I will ask at playgroup if anyone uses them otherwise I will go to our baby shop today and see if they have any. If I have no luck either way I will just go to ebay.
just be careful with ebay. while there are possibly some good nappies there, most of the nappies with the best reputation that are reliable and loved are sold by WAHPs listed in the bubhub directory, at www.ozclothnappies.org/links and through places like www.buyena.com and www.ozebaby.com.au. You can also read some reviews if you do a search of this forum for nappy reviews, and if you head on over to www.nappycino.com.
The only reason I send out caution about ebay is because some parents have bought cheap nappies from ebay, and Kmart/BigW (fluffies) and been very disappointed with them, experiencing leaks, poor absorbancy, manufacture and fit. They *might* work for you, but beware that if you do get cheap ones, and they don't work, if might just mean that you should look elsewhere for a nappy that will work for you.

Hi Oscarthegrouch
:) This is my response to a similar question - I'm very new to this and this is what I'm doing to try out cloth. hope it helps - I'm finding this a really easy way of converting from disposables to cloth and not quite as expensive.

mum_2_5 a lot of the WAHMs have demonstrators so you can touch and feel them before buying. Baby beehinds do it, nuture nappies do which carries a large number of different brands and types of cloth nappies.
that might be the best way for you to go, have a demo and that way you can get your little ones measurements make sure you buy ones that fit, and get it all explained to you!

hi oscarthegrouch
its such a good decision to convert but the variety of modern cloth systems is so huge and they all seem to do a great job so its hard to know where to start.
Oh....and we are on to our 5th leak-free day:smiliedance:
I am loving using cloth!!
good luck on your decision!
cheers Georgia

That's great, thanks for that. I've ordered some Baby Beehinds and am just about to order some Eenee's. I'm so sick of disposables and the smell ...etc...... And then there's the price, they're going up all the time.
