When can you tell?

Does anyone know the exact date you can tell what your having.
I thought you could tell from 16 weeks on but one ultra sound person said 18 weeks & another said 20 when another said 12 but it wont be sure.
Then i heard from my friend today that you can only find out from 18 to 20 weeks, anytime before or after that can't be done.
Does anyone know who was right in all this confusion? Lol.

I did a little bit of research into this as I wanted to be able to tell the sex of bub ASAP.

Before 16 weeks boys and girls look similar,girls have a nub that may look like a tiny penis.
Some technicians can tell at 12 weeks the .sex but most dont like to.Mine told me at 12 weeks 60% having a boy but too tiny to be 100%
At 18 - 20 weeks is more accurate and they are less l likely to make a mistake.

I googled ultrasound pics and information.

I don't know the sex of my baby, but I asked the Ob if he knew at the 12 week scan, and he said he would have a guess with about 60 per cent accuracy, but he said it's much clearer at 16 weeks.

i got told at 14 weeks and from the angle of the pic there was denying he had a set of balls there!!!:laughing:

we have just had nother scan at 18w and yep definatly still a boy!!!

but at 12 weeks they wouldnt take the guess!!

They told me at 12 weeks with my third son he was a boy...they cover themselves at that stage by saying looks like,etc but she was right.......never found out with my first and second and my 4th they couldn't tell as angle was all wrong....

I too got told at 12 weeks i was having a girl and they were right :) 20 weeks is more garunteed and i had to have an ultrasound at 36 weeks and they could tell i was having a girl then aswell :) goodness knows how? im sure there wasnt much room to see in there

I found out at 18 weeks with my 2nd, and at 12 weeks with my 3rd both boys. This time they said boy again at 12 weeks, but 25% chance it could still be a girl. Will be checking and hoping at my 18 week scan

The earliest that I have been able to find out is 16 weeks, it was very clear that there was a penis and balls lol. and it was confirmed 2 days later(I had an amnio done and it tells the sex).

With my DD they told me at 19 weeks. I had asked at 17 weeks at the same place and they said it was too early. I didn't ask at the 12 week scan.
This time around Different place to last) I asked at 12, 17 and 19 weeks and they all said the same. We didn't tell them what we had previously been told.
It depends on the technician and the machines that they use.

It really comes down to the skill of the technician, and if they feel confident enough and know enough about the whole nub thing. Apparently it is more to do with the angle of things at 12 weeks. I myself only found out with my 3rd, and that was at the 18 week scan. The tech. wasn't confident in it with my 12 week scan so we had to wait.

I was told at 20weeks with my first DS and this time around at 12.5weeks another boy.
The tech was so certain she printed out a picture of its suposed bits ( I couldnt make it out) with "boy" and "wow' typed on it lol. Further scans all said boy
My friend found out at 13weeks also a boy but her tech said she was 80% sure. Boy was confirmed at 20 week scan.
