View Full Version : Routine for 13 month old
Can anyone suggest a routine that works for them for a 13 or so month old? I was following the Gina Ford Contended baby timings which was working really well for Em.
It went along the lines of:
Breakie - 7 7.30am
Nap - 9 - 9.45
Lunch - midday
A/n nap - 12.30 - 2pm ish
Dinner - 5 pm and bed at 7 (with a bath around 6.30ish)
She seems much happier knowing when she's going to bed, to eat etc. Unfortunately the book stops at 12 month olds and she is finding it really hard to sleep at 9am now but can't last until lunch without getting totally over tired and not wanting to eat. If I put her down for a nap mid-morning she then won't sleep again in the day!
Ahhhh - help!!

Maybe shes ready to drop her two sleeps and just have one?
Try giving her lunch at around 11am and then put her down to sleep at 11:30, her sleep should be longer this way probably around 2-2 1/5 hours. When you put her down for the midmorning nap and she didnt go down for another sleep was she acting tired or happy? That would hopefully help u with the answer if shes ready to drop her two sleeps.
Hope this helps xx

I started a rountine with my DS at 13months that he's still doing now (bed time is just half hour later now).
It goes
7am-8am- Wake up, have breakfast
10am- Morning tea
11:30am- Lunch
12pm- Sleep for apprx 2hours (longer now that he runs around)
3pm- Arfternoon Tea
5pm- Dinner
6pm-6:30pm- Bath then milk
7pm- Bed
I got this routine when I took DS to tresilian and its worked wonderfully. He now doesn't wake in the morning till 8am-9am and he goes to bed at 7:30pm but u just alter as they get older.
Hi, there is a follow on book that includes older babies and toddlers: http://www.contentedbaby.com/books-Sleep.htm.
Maybe you could get it from Amazon or get a bookshop to order it?

My DS is 14 months old and has been in the following routine from about 12 months
7am-8am - Wake up, have breakfast
10a-11am - Milk and Nap (approx 1-1.5 hour)
12-12.30pm - Lunch
3.30pm-4pm - Milk and Nap (approx 1-1.5 hour)
6pm - Dinner
7pm-7:30pm - Bath
8pm - Milk and Bed
He's not ready to drop his morning nap yet, get grumpy if he hasn't slept...

I'll second what BabyLover said about shifting to one nap. My dd did this around that age and we had a month of so of changing her routine on an almost daily basis as she made the transition. Either shift her morning nap to be slightly later (10ish) with lunch after she wakes. Or bring her lunch forward a little earlier so she's not too tired to eat it and put her down for a nap right after. If you do the later then she may need a snack either mid morning or in the mid afternoon in order to get through to dinnertime.

Yeah it sounds like everything is fine she just wants to cut back to one sleep.
The transition phase of this is hard, it will probably take her a few weeks to adjust. It took DD about that. She was waking up at night wanting to play which was how we knew it was time.
You'll probably have a tired cranky bub for a few weeks but they do adjust.
I also agree with the suggestions to bring her lunch forward and put her down after that.
If the rest of her routine is working I wouldn't mess with it.
Thanks for you advice everyone......I definately think its a 'dropping a nap' thing so am hoping taht following some of your routines and time will help.

Hi Claire and little Em,
I was wondering exactly the same thing! if Taiya has 2 sleeps during the day she will not go to bed until 10:30pm at night. I tried with one sleep yesterday and it worked well. she gets grumpy around 11:30 - 12:30 but I think I will persist. Let me know how you guys go dropping the sleep.
