Hi there,

I've got two questions for breastfeeding veterans! :) I've got a 10 week old baby (can't believe he's 10 weeks!!). At the moment he seems to have fallen into a pretty consistent feeding schedule but I've had recent worries about how often he's feeding (did an earlier post about how he suddenly seems to be drinking less). So I was googling how often he's "supposed" to drink and everywhere seems to say 8-12 times a day!! My two questions are:

1) Please let me know if this seems right to you: breastfeeding roughly at 3am, 7:30am, 10:30am, 2ish, 5:30ish, and around 9pm?? He's putting on heaps of weight and weeing a lot so I think it's okay but am worried what will happen when/if he drops that 3am feed. I've read that 5 feeds is not enough - should I then squeeze 6 feeds into the daytime?

2) Any tips for getting him to drop the 3am feed (e.g. should I squeeze another feed into the daytime somewhere to see if that helps) or will that just happen with time?

Thanks so much for your advice ladies!

x Em

Hi

If he is gaining weight and has lots of wet nappies than thats perfect. I really wouldnt get too hung up on the exact no of feeds he is having.

As for dropping the 3am I dont think you want to hear from me....dd(2) 15 months is still having hers

Sounds like your doing a great job...enjoy:D:yelclap:

Think you are doing really well! Just see what happens if you try to drop the 3am feed. If he is still hungry he won't allow you to do it. keep an eye on his nappies and if they are still nice and wet and clear then I wouldn't worry. DD1 dropped the night feed at about 8 months and DD2 was about 14 months. You get so use to it and some nights I wouldn't realise I had been up to them! Good luck and everything sounds perfect ATM. Oh and give the ABA a call, they are great.

hi EmyN, I think you are doing just fine. The average size for a bub to drop the '3am' feed is about 10lb, so maybe it wont be happening for much longer. I left the hospital with my baby having only 6 to 7 feeds a day, and everyone was quite happy with that. My babies all put themselves into a 3 hour routine, and they did just fine. I would not be worried, it all seems just perfect to me. If bub decides he wants more feeding you will know, and they do go though growth spurts, so the feeding pattern changes every few weeks. lol... my DS was born 10lb, and had the 3am feed for about a year.

As everyone has said above. If your son is putting on weight, and is weeing plenty, you are doing really well.

TBH i never tried to push my kids out of feeding at the times they wanted to feed. I found that if i tried, i often caused more problems for my self, ie they would wake twice instead of just the once, but earlier in the morning. I personally would leave the 3am feed. He needs it to grow, and you need it to help keep your milk supply going along as well as it appears to be.

Really? Why didn't anyone tell that to my DD2 who was born over 10lb and fed every two hours around the clock until she was 11 months old.

OP I think your baby is doing great! One 5 hour stretch is considered sleeping through the night at that age so I wouldn't be stressing about the 3am feed. My girls both dropped their night time feeds of their own accord.

All sounds great to me I wouldn't mess with it, could be much worse. Keep up the great work.
