A bird that died soon after bit me last week and drew blood.

Should I get a vaccine or something? I'm really stressing about it. I called the vet at the ER that treated the bird.....well, euthanised it actually because it was injured.......and she said birds can give humans diseases but not from their bites.

But I'm still freaking out.

Yeah I probably should. Sometimes I feel silly though, but I'll give them a call.

If it was a bat that bit you then yes, you could get rabies. A bird bite is generally harmless other than the usual risk of infection from a puncture wound by an unclean object. Maybe a dose of antibiotics would be called for if it starts to get red and hot and sore, and maybe a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the last 10 years, as bird beaks come into contact with soil when they're digging for bugs and soil carries the tetanus-causing bacteria.

Yeah maybe I'll go get a tetanus shot, make an appointment with my doctor tomorrow.

This is probably thread number fifteen I've started about tetanus:laughing::laughing::laughing:. I think I had it in a former life LOL.

It's healed up now but yeah maybe I should get a shot. Though the shots won't do much hey if you already have it?

Now I'm paranoid. I wish you could make appointments at night:(.

What's the first symptom of tetanus?

bada

I believe the first symptom of tetanus is to post compulsively on internet forums :p

Rabies don't really exist in Australia... unlike the USA where you can get rabies from all sorts of small creatures and its recommended you get a vaccination against it.

Tetanus could be a possibility... symptoms of this would include spasms, lock-jar, difficulty swallowing etc.

If you're one to vaccinate, it's an injection they recommend you get once every 10 years... so you could always go get it done anyway.

A warning though - it hurts more than regular vaccinations.

You won't get rabies - it's not in Australia. Why our quarantine restrictions are so tough. In fact, a quick google search hasn't come up with ANYTHING you can catch from a bird bite. And if it was last week, you would have symptoms of something by now, at least a fever or inflamed around the bite.

But if you're already incubating tetanus what will a vaccine do?

Mrs Nietzsche

You don't have tetanus.

Lets look on the bright side, if you get rabies no one will visit, and then you can buy less christmas presents, so you save money.:santa:

You can't get tetanus from a bird bite and we don't have rabies in Oz and it is only carried by mammals.

Clean the wound well, dunk in antiseptic, put on a bandaid and here's a mummies magic "all better" kiss. :D

You can't get tetanus from a bird bite

Why not? Tetanus is mainly soil borne, and birds dig in soil with their beaks. If the bacteria enters the skin through a puncture wound (e,g, a bite that breaks the skin enough to draw blood) then theoretically it is possible to get tetanus from a bird bite.

PunkyDiva

 Theoretically but extremely unlikely.

Well I got a tetanus shot update today anyway.

Thanks all for supporting a hypochondriac. I don't like diseases where you don't pass out from pain but remain lucid:laughing:.

Reminds me of a joke from my ex about how a woman can bleed for 5 days every month without "apparent" death. lol

Bird flu?:D

Seriously, though, you can get something really nasty from bats. Somebody (maybe in Brisbane) died from it a couple of years ago. I can't remember the name of it.

Yeah you're right MsMummy, it was Bat lyssa virus. Which is a type of rabies or a member of the family I believe, but different to the rabies we know of in other countries.

However as 2 people out of well, whats the current population?

Anyway I believe you are more likely to die from a vending machine falling on you after enraging you by withholding it's transfat ladden treats.

I wonder what else you are more likely to get/ likely to happen than contract tetanus?

Honestly though Avany, you're right.
I think you have had quite a few threads on tetanus.

Why tetanus and not like, measles?

this is three months old....

unless it bit you in the leg where you have now got the boil thing, but I can't see anything taking this long to incubate.

I got bitten by a gopher in Canada 2 years ago and had a rabies shot. Nice memory. Evil gopher. Mean, mean gopher!
