Ok, So does anyone here have a Bugaboo pram?

Everyone in my area has one and my DP were talking about how wanky it was. More of a status symbol, like driving round in a Bently.

I've been looking round at prams and actually did a non judgemental look at the bugaboo's and even though they are enormously expensive, I saw the Buggaboo Gekko which is the cheaper version and it looked quite good.

I liked that they were light weight and minimal. And .. i LOVE the green one!!

I could get one from O.S sent over for about $900.

Would anyone recommend them?

personaly i think they are a statment but would never buy one there are other modles out there that are just as light weight and as good if not better when taking punishment from babys to toddlers which last just as long and are 3rd of the price. it cost enought just to keep baby in every thing from bottles and teets to nappys and such but thats my opion everyone to there own

I don't have one, but I did have a mountain buggy urban that was not cheap when compared to many other prams on the market as my first pram - and miss it every day now that I have a different pram that accomodates two children better. One of the things about buying a good quality pram that I have found - they wear better, they last longer, they are lighter, easier to fold, easier to manouvre, and easier to clean. Status symbol? Maybe - but if you can afford something better quality often it means that it will be an investment as it will last longer than something cheaper that breaks, wears, etc.

Swanky with a silent 'S'.

Like many things, it's more about the name than the product. We looked at them and decided that if it was the best pram we would pay out for it, but we weren't convinced. DH noticed a faulty bit on it in the shop.

We got a different pram for less than 1/3 of the price of the bugaboo (also an established 'name' brand), and what do you know, it does exactly the same job, and I still love it.

The Bugaboo Gecko didn't get a very favourable review in Choice magazine, especially for such an expensive pram vs some of the cheapies they reviewed. Main problems were:

* Not very easy to operate - only scored something like 50 out of 100
* There is a danger of the child getting his/her fingers caught somewhere in the pram
* Even though the tyres are inflatable it doesn't come with a pump

Not sure about the Bugaboo Cameleon as they didn't review that one. Also be careful about purchasing from overseas as you may have to pay a fair bit of customs duty etc.

I used to live in sydney's eastern suburbs and they were everywhere. I would see mothers groups in the park or westfields and everyone of them would have a bugaboo. I do think they are a bit of status symbol but if you can afford it they seem to be a pretty good pram. There a lot of new prams in a similar style on the market now for half the price these days.

The bugaboo would fetch a good sale price if you wanted to sell it when your done with it.

Mouse&Piglet,

The quinny doesn't come with a basinette though does it?

I think I might actually go for the Esprit Infinity Childcare.

I want one with a bassinette and preferably four wheels.

I would have loved the bugaboo but couldn't justify the $$$$ so I looked at some similar alternatives. I wanted a four wheeler pram (must be an even number thing!) and there were a few out there. I'm so glad I found mine!!

I have the Childcare Infinity and it is a great pram! Even my DH loves it which is a nice change! It's lightweight, turns on a dime, comes with all the accessories (Bassinet, upright seat, sleeping bag, raincover). It folds down easily and the handle folds so you can get into tight spaces if need be. I love it, my bub loves it and it is so easy to steer with one hand so I can hold my DS1's hand at the same time!

Mine's red but I saw the Esprit one and that's a really nice colour. I've had mine for about 6 months and have just graduated from the bassinet to the upright seat - DS2 loves it, the sleeping bag thingie keeps him warm and when you collapse the pram you don't have to take the seat off - it stays on the whole time. (the bassinet did have to come when collapsing the pram) Easy Peasy!

good luck on your pram discovery journey!!
cheers

I think you mean the Quinny Speedi for only $400.....Buzz's have never been that cheap.

The Quinny Buzz is still on sale:

$800 for the pram & $300 for the bassinette, & I'd highly recommend to also get the shopping basket for only $35 extra. Well worth it if you don't mind spending that much as it comes with everything you need - nappy bag, tyre pump, raincovers, mosquito cover, dust cover for the bassinette for when storing.....not to mention the hydraulic unfolding is awesome! I get so many nice compliments about my pram, DH always want to push it......and I have never ever seen another Buzz in Adelaide yet.

my eldest will be 10 at the end of the year. when she was a baby i had a friend that wanted a pram that was the newest thing on the market...wouldnt you know it, it was the same style as this bugaboo!

i thought it looked weird but she raved about it. it cost about $100 more than mine. id spent about $200 for a steelcraft stroller... so the new thing wasnt at the top end of the price range.

now the celebs have one and they show it in mags like womans day, its like new all over again.

Justify buying one? Sure, I can justify buying a bugaboo, I mean why not? I dont smoke, dont drink, havent been able to splurge on clothes for a while due to pg belly and I work F/T (apart from maternity leave).
The way I see it, if you can afford to buy something that you want and it isnt detrimental to anything else that may need to be paid for and you havent paid for it on credit, then isnt that justification in itself?

As for our reasons for buying a Bugaboo Cammy - We like the look of it, like the basinette, its very easy to steer and DH thinks it is great because it is not to "mumsy" so he wont mind pushing it around.

I also have a Chameleon, and I also love it. My DH and I are not particularly 'flashy' people, ie we don't drive the latest car or wear designer clothes, but we did quite thorough research on the pram thing and agreed that it was worth splashing out on something that we really wanted.

I like the look of it, but more importantly I like the fact that it can be taken apart and stored separately - we used the bassinette part for taking DS to people's places and left the wheels at home. It is also incredibly light and easy to manoeuvre, and once you get the hang of it, it's easy to pack away. It came with bassinette, seat and rain cover, I can get it up and down stairs easily. I bought at babies galore during a '20% off everything' sale.

I agree that it's obviously not worth going into debt over, but we don't spend money on cigarettes, alcohol or flat-screen TVs, and my theory was that I'll be using this thing every day for at least a year (and again with my second child), so I want it to be lightweight, useful and nice to look at. If anything the 'trendiness' of it was putting me off, as I don't want people to think I'm wanky for having one, but in the end I decided that was their problem if they thought that. I buy DS' clothes from KMart and Target as I don't believe in wasting money on expensive clothes that he will grow straight out of, but I'm happy with my purchase of the bugaboo because I've found it really useful. People do go on about how ridiculously expensive it is, there is a lot in the media about it, but people waste much more money on what I think are far less useful products. If we couldn't afford it we would have got the Swallow Beemer Q as it seems like it has similar functionality (but I didn't like the large front wheel).

You could always consider checking ebay if you want a cheaper one, but make sure they're genuine!
So that's my two cents' worth!!

we have a frog that my mum brought from canada, so the price thing never came into it as it was a gift.

at first we were a bit "oh no, a wanky yuppie bugaboo. how will we live this down???" . then we used it and have become bugaboo fanatics!!!

turns so well!!! easy to push!! light!! fits into tiny car!! i silently thank mum everytime i drag it up steps or steep hills.

and i guess lots of prams are expensive, so it depends on what you want to spend your money on. if i had to fork out $$ for it, i still might have after using it. i was also given another pram - 4 wheeler thing. and it was big and heavy and i couldn't wait to give it to vinnies.

love that bug:thumbsup:

Hi

Status symbol? Maybe, maybe not. I'd say it depends more on where you live.

Down here in Canberra I've probably seen 2 bugaboo's since my wife fell pregnant (and when you know bub is coming you start checking out everyone's baby gear). By far the most popular is the Swallow...the one that came in well on Choice...and there are heaps of those around for very good reason.

Anyway, I spent a good month researching a pram/stoller (both 3 wheeler and 4 weeler varieties). Unlike most other furniture/gear you buy (like cot etc), these particular items need to be capable of handling such a very wide variety of situations and conditions. Like...they need to handle bub for a few years (maybe 2nd, 3rd bub too), they'll be banged around, folded literally hundreds/thousands of tiems , thrown in the boot, rained on etc...you'll take them shopping, holidays, probably on public transport, walking around the suburbs, taken to the park, down the beach... the list goes on.

Ultimately it's all about your REAL usage and budget. The features you find valueable to yourself and the circumstances you'll most frequenly find yourself in. There's no point buying a particular pram/stroller that is exceptionally good in a circustance that you'll find yourself in only 1% of the time. If you live in the country then probably you'll need a very different product than if you live more in the city or suburbia.

Anyway, bub hasn't arrived yet but we decided on the Bugaboo Cameleon. Yes it was expensive, but overall it was the best pram for our requirements. Once the decision was made it was then just a case of shopping around for the best deal. DJ's had a 15% off sale last month so we grabbed one - RRP for $1,499 which came down to around $1,275(ish). Still expensive though....

Just my 2c worth. Hope you find it useful.

I didn't know a thing about prams when I first saw the Bugaboo on display. I don't read celeb magazines or watch celeb gossip stuff so I didn't know what they pushed their sprogs around in ... I always assumed they had someone else push them around, anyway. So my getting a Cammy was nothing to do with status symbol or trying to follow the latest trends.

I liked the design from the get-go. I liked the reversible handle - a feature that few other strollers on the market had. I liked the compactness. I liked the manoeverability. I liked that, when folded, it would fit under my bed (space is somewhat restricted where we live). I like the 2 year warranty and the promise of a replacement pram should repairs need to be carried out. I LOVE that I managed to get it on sale :D

The cost did rankle us down to our very cores, though. After months of oohing and ahhing about it, we glumly agreed to settle for a cheaper option without all the features we wanted. Eventually, we both said "sod it" and gave in. We splurge on very little and as this is a purchase that will be used pretty much every day, so yes, I could justify the cost. Besides, we figure the sproglet is paying for it anyway with it's maternity payment.

I have been researching prams for the last 2-3 months. There are so many on the markets that are all so different......

We are now down to the Bugaboo Cammy and the Mountain Buggy.....quite similar in price once you get all the bits and pieces. We like them as they are both quite light to lift and can fit into the boot of my small car.....

We wont make the final decision for another couple of months as I want to be completely happy with the decision before paying the $$$

We arent buying the Bug for the 'status symbal' - rather it is so easy to maneauvre and steer....A few of our friends have this pram and have raved about how fantastic it is......

Good Luck with your decision

Hi

I also have the cameleon. We purchased it about 8 mths ago just before the birth of Oliver. I researched many prams and test drove so so many. It wasn't hhard to make my decision that i loved the cameleon. As for the price i didn't have too much of a problem with it. I know many people who have bought a cheaper pram first up, and had it break within 12 mths and bought a dearer one second or even 3rd time round. Also the resale on these is fabulous- check out what they go for on ebay.

I have just purchased a new set of covers for my camy and everyone thinks ive got a new pram. It's fabulous.

I didnt buy mine for the status symbol. we live in a small country town and i dont think any one knows what the pram is and no one definately knows how much their worth.

I think their definately worth their money.

I can't justify lots of things I have bought for bubby :D

I don't have a bugaboo coz I didn't want one. But if I did want one you can be sure I would have one. Its just one of those things that mummy's want so mummy's get.

I just got the one that I liked and the cost wasn't the main decider. I liked the look of them when I was out and about and asked a lady who had one what she thought of it.

Babies are special and its an exciting time, so if people go overboard, ah well, plenty of other things are worse than that I suppose!!

Hi
I have a DD who's 8 mo and have the Bugaboo Frog. I've been really happy with it - it's really light and extremely easy to manouver. Recently though i've noticed that when i fully recline it, dd's head is lower than her feet. When speaking with Bugaboo and the retailer it appears that im not supposed to use the full recline when using the seat (as opposed to the bassinet for newborns which you can obviously have totally flat). Apparently you're supposed to use the 2nd upright position which is about the same as a car capsule. Now that we're planning another bub, we're looking at a Phil & Ted as the Bugaboo doesnt cater for a second bub.
Overall though, it's a beautiful pram but not sure whether it's worth the $1500 we paid for it.
Hope this helps.

Hi there,

I'm another Bugaboo convert, I have just ordered my Cameleon from DJ's.

I was in Amsterdam recently (actually where bubba was conceived) and while we were there I started noticing the prams that everyone had (and I mean EVERYONE), I actually became a little bit obsessed. I thought they were great, so compact and they looked really stylish, as someone said earlier not too mumsie. I found out what brand they were, but didn't know what they cost until I got home. I already had my little heart set on the Bugaboo before I knew the price or that they were at all trendy. I then spent lots of time researching prams and looking at different options. I tried to convince myself that some of the cheeper prams would be just as good, and that $1500 was a rediculous price for a pram but in the end I had to accept that I wouldn't be happy with anything else. Everyone has already given a rundown of the features, so you don't need it again from me. Besides, my baby was made in Holland, so it deserves a pram that was made in Holland too!

DJ's just had a sale, giving 15% off if you purchased the Bugaboo and the matching Footmuff and Nappy Bag, which works out to just a bit more than the pram on its own, so I got about $300 worth of extras for about $45.:yelclap:

I guess I justified the price because I won't be spending huge amounts on other things. I don't need an expensive trendy cot etc but I don't have to spend 12 months walking around chained to the cot. It may be a bit superficial but If I have to lug the thing around then I want it to work well AND look good.

If you know someone going to the Netherlands they are MUCH cheaper to buy there and bring home with you. (In the same way a mountain buggy is cheaper if purchased in NZ and brought home - worth the hassle for the savings you make!)

T Bear

They're actually not that much cheeper over there, because the Dollar is pretty weak against the Euro it only comes to a few hundred (which is not to be sneezed at mind you). I considered getting my rellies to send one over for me but the biggest problem with that is that the Warrenty is then held in Holland, so for all repairs etc you actually have to send it back there. I thought it was worth getting it here just for Peace of Mind - also because most of my rellies are useless and I probably wouldn't get it until the baby was 3 weeks old or something.
