I was at my wits end the other month with my poor long suffering girls eczema, that again I ended up at my Dr's, again wanting them just to find something to fix the problem...but this time my Dr had heard about a new cream that has only just been on the market for about 1year, Elidel, this cream has worked absolutely wonders for my girls esp my eldest as she was the worst of the 2. It is not a steriod cream (I have always been really hesitant to use too much of these creams), but Elidel has really changed my girls, Brookes legs now look like normal little legs not constantly red and inflammed and itchy, I used it constantly for about 10 days twice a day to start with and now I am using it about once a fortnight on tiny little flare up areas usually when she is has been in the bubbles in the bath (she is sneaky!) and they are gone by morning.
It is not on the PBS so it is quite expensive but apparently it is cheaper at those cheaper pharmacies.
I hope that this can help someone out there as much as it has me, and I was just interested to know if anyone else had had such a success with this cream?

Elidel is something I personally would stay away from.

read the warnings on this page:

I was given elidel to use on my DD's face when she was only a baby as Doctor does not recommend steroid cream on the face so it was a lifesaver. We still use it from time to time for flareups but after reading some of the warnings I prefer to use it only when I need it on the face and use the steroid cream on the legs. Its still my preferred choice though on the face for bad times.

There is another non-steroid cream available without a prescription called Atopiclair. It isn't as strong but works when we have a little flareup before hitting the prescription creams.

I couldn't read the link Ang posted (blocked by work) but I've read previous warnings about it linked to cancer in rats and stuff. there are a few older threads around if you wanted poke around for them :)

I agree with AM, I also found for me, it ruined the integrity of my skin. Worse than any steroid cream ever had. My skin broke out and took months to fix.

I think like everything it only works for some.

I am glad you dd's have found something that works for them.

yes it has worked really well for my girls, so sorry you haven't found something that works for you as I know how frustrating and agonising it can be. and I will continue to use it sporadically. I read all the warnings and talked extensivley to a phamisist the 'Rats' that developed the lymphomas were actually given the cream in an oral form for a long length of time and the trials have been on people that have used it for over 23 months, and there was no actual increase in the lyphomas in the trial group as you would find in a normal population group.
I absolutley agree that it is not a long term cream, along with the steriod creams and all other medicated creams, but the pharmasist I spoke to said that topical cream used for such a short time would have minimal absorbancy anyway.
I am loving the fact that it has worked and I just hope that everyone can find something that works well for them!
Really interesting to hear your comments thankyou.

I'm glad you are aware of the limitations of it, and it is awesome it has worked for you!

Eczema is evil.

Thanks for the heads up AM. We have several incidences of both skin cancer and lymphoma in my family, so this is definitely out.

Elidel has actually been around for quite a few years now. DS was prescribed it when he was a bub and he is now 4. It does work wonders. We havent used it in years and excessive use of anything is bound to have side effects.
