Hope this is the right place to post this question - didn't think it fit in "breathing issues"? My 4 1/2 month old has started coughing. It's dry and sounds "fake". Have read that teething and excess saliva can cause this or dry (heated) air. I use a humidifier at night and saline nose drops in the morning to help moisten things. The coughing only seems to happen when he's lying down and talking (babbling!) up a storm so that's why I suspect it's "fake" and he's just discovered another sound he can make - especially because I look at him when he does it! Is there anything I am missing or should worry about or consider?

I'm having the same thing with my 5.5 month old. It has calmed down a lot - she doesn't do it as much as she used to. I quickly realised that it wasn't anything to be concerned about because when she would start to cough I would quickly turn around to see if she was OK and she would give me this cheeky little smile :) I think it's the whole "this is a new sound I can make" phase - she has moved on to raspberry blowing now.

But if you are concerned I would definitely take him to the GP.

I could of written both those posts, ds is doing exactly the same thing. I took him to the gp a while back and everything was fine so it must also be something tickling his throat?

F totally loves coughing. he thinks it is great, especially because i cough back at him and tell him he must be very sick!
go to gp if concerned but i think it is very normal and doesn't necessarily mean a thing except that it is fun!

DD2 is a fake cougher, she could go on for hours coughing. Almost 7 months she still dose it to get my attention.
DD1 is a sneezer to get your attention.

We have it going on here too. It's really fun in the middle of the night to get our attention, we go to him and he has the biggest smile on his face saying 'I'm awake!!'. Trying to learn to ignore it (haha!)

oh hahaha, my dd has been fake coughing since the day we brought her home. she does it before shes about to cry or as a prelude to her cry to let us know she's frustrated.
on the odd occasion that she does really cough i laugh because it sounds different and i cant help it
