I had been having waves of back pain all day Monday, just waiting.. wondering if they were contractions (being that Nugget was posterior I wasn't getting anything in the front) didn't really take toooo much notice of them.
At about 8.30pm I asked Rynosmum, who I'd known had had a posterior labour, to describe her contractions... with her coaxing I started timing them... 10 minutes apart! YAY!
I settled down into bed for the night, waking on occasion as I was uncomfortable. At 3.30am I couldn't sleep anymore, wondered out and timed a few more... closer together now at 6 minutes apart.. lasting close to a minute!
I knew it was "it"
Chris woke up and was sent to work "Nah, probably won't happen for a while sweetie" I said at 7 as he left.
At 7.20 I felt sick and while throwing up my waters broke!!! I was very worried as no one told me about blood with the waters breaking and because all I'd felt was warm and I looked down and there was blood I hit the panics and called the hospital. Nothing else was gushing so of course I was panicking. They suggested I come in so I called Chris and he had to turn around, in peak our traffic, make it back home, in peak hour traffic, and then get me to the hospital... in peak hour traffic.
What should have taken 20 minutes ended up taking 1.5 hours... BUT we got there at 9am on the dot!
I was having pretty regular contractions but they had to check out what the bleeding was (I was insistant that there was "A LOT OF BLOOD" apparently there wasn't...? I didn't realise it was my waters breaking and there was no gushing or anything so they didn't check for that) they decided it was.. nothing! I felt like a hypochondriac and they said they were going to send me home as my contractions didn't feel strong (bugger that, they hurt ME!) and they weren't frequent enough. After talking to his superior tho', the doctor decided to admit me to ward because I was insistant about the bleeding. So off I toddled, to maternity ward, told I'd be sent home the next day.
I had to labour along in this room full with 2 ladies that had newborns with them, which was hard, I felt unable to make any noise. I stood in the shower for about an hour and a half, the pain was getting unbearable and not much seemed to help (the shower was a great help when I realised that after I turned it off) We decided to go for a walk, I couldn't walk much at all, a 5 minute walk to the car and back turned into about 40-50 minutes with me stopping constantly to breathe/hip swing/hug Chris and cry.
We got back to the ward where there'd been a shift change so I asked the new midwife for some pain relief and was offered..... PANADOL?! But she saw I was in a lot of pain and asked what I wanted to do, I told her I wanted to go to Birth Suite so I could labour without waking babies and get some pain relief. About half an hour they told me I was free to go down! YAY!
Got down there and was asked if I would like some gas! I happily sucked on Mr Gas (as I named him) I was as HIGH AS A KITE. Sensational. I felt the contractions (still all in my back) but focused on making the gas rattle with my inhaling so that was all kinds of handy.
I had a wonderful midwife who was such a happy, bubbly person. She was lovely and laughed at all of my gas-induced jokes about the Bundy Bear and called me a 2-pot screamer after being so high from one contraction. She checked how I was going and it was decided I was 4cm dilated! WOO! Active labour here I come! Chris confirmed with her that the average is 1cm/hour so we'd be there for another 6 hours... While she was checking me they decided that the blood gush of the morning was my waters breaking and the reason that no one believed me was because the baby's head had blocked the rest of the flow, so she broke my waters which just intensified the contractions and then put me on my side which was amazing, the pain shifted from my back to my front and I felt like I was actually doing something! :D
I sucked on the gas and made -A-LOT- of noise which each contraction. I visualised the pain, making it big and then small as it went away (not a technique I learnt, just something that happened when I squeezed my eyes) This should be the time when I tell you all how wonderful my husband was, he reminded me to breathe, he told me I was strong, he fed me water, he was just plain fantastic... My rock.
ANYWAY, at some point through this whole thing I decided the pain was too much, Chris tried to ask about pethidine and I whacked him in his face for suggesting such a thing.. and then sobbed... "I *sob* think *sob* I *sob* want *sob* an *sob* epidural *sob* now. *sob*" and when asked if it was really what I wanted I sadly nodded and off they went to get someone to start the process. They tried to put the cannula into my wrist for the IV but apparently my wrist was "fleshy" and they couldn't get it in right, blood was shooting out! (yay!). It had been an hour since they last checked me to see I was 4cm and decided to check again.. I remember hearing.. "Oh my goodness, you're 10cm dilated!" so it was then suggested I get up onto all-fours to start pushing!
So up I got, apparently this is where I lost it a bit, I don't remember but Chris was saying I started freaking out about not being able to do anything, all I remember was Chris on one side telling me I could do it and the midwife on the other patting my head, kissing my forehead and telling me I was doing really well. I pushed a few times, I could feel Nugget crowning (confirmed by Chris who decided to have a peek and quickly ran back to my head) and after just 5 pushed and about 20 minutes... instant relief!!
I said "Oooh! I hear her crying!!!" and Chris went to check out our new little girl.. before coming back to the head of the bed... I do believe the words were.. "Oh my god.. Nikki... it's a boy." and I believe my words were "You're ****ting me."
After the midwives confirmed and I turned to have a look.. sure enough.. there were the franks and the beans. :)
And I couldn't have been happier :D
He was a bit sleepy for some reason, so they waved oxygen in his face and he perked right up, I got a cuddle and then Chris got a cuddle before handing him back to me for his first feed. :)
We argued about named, asking the baby for his opinion for each one. We decided on Cobey Clarence.
Cobey is a name we both liked.. it's the joining of 2 names that I like - Corey and Tobey. Clarence is the middle name of my Grandad whom I love with all my heart and sadly passed away close to a year ago.
With him popping out so fast I quickly had my 2nd Degree Tear stitched up and we were put back into the bed that I was labouring in earlier. He is such a good little poppet..! And even tho' we were expecting one for the pink team.. we couldn't be happier!
