There are probably other threads about this, but I need to get to bed and don't have time to search. Just wondering how old your little one was when they dropped to one nap a day? And how did you know it was time to drop a nap? DS has mostly been a great napper during the day, and we have a really consistent routine. For the past several months (can't remember how many) he gets up around 6.30, nap 9-10.00 or 10.30ish, nap 1.30-3.00ish (or 2.00-3.30 or 4) then bed at 7-7.30. THe past two nights he's had a LOT of trouble getting to sleep at night. He's hardly seemed tired, like he usually does. I"m wondering if perhaps he is starting to need only one nap, slightly earlier in the day... not really sure how to tell. He didn't get to sleep until almost 9 tonight, which is so unusual.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks

You didn't mention how old bub was, but mine was around 13 months.

We were the same as you, very consistent routine, but the trigger for us was that the morning nap, he would take up to an hour to go to sleep. Not crying or upset, just talking, he wasn't tired any more.

It was a difficult transition, and meant that he went to bed much earlier at night, but he also went to sleep much faster at night!

Sorry, I left out the important detail! He's just turned one. So maybe we're getting into the period when a transition to one nap wouldn't be out of the question.

Hi there.. (my first time on here!!) I was actually wondering the same thing. But my little man is 19 months!! Still would easily have 2 naps a day (1-2 hrs ea). But we're thinking that he should be old enough to have just 1??? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Going thru a transition at the moment.. but most days by 5pm his exhausted, and gets cranky! Aaahhh what to do? He will generally sleep 9 - 10hrs thru the night. So putting him to bed at 6pm, is not going to work. Is 2 naps at this age normal???

11 months DS went from two naps to one. He was just ready for it i guess. He would sleep for 2-2.5hrs at midday.

At 10 months mine is transitioning right now. You don't need to 'do' anything, either they will sleep twice in the day, or they will probably take a super late nap in the afternoon, and then sleep thru to the morning.

They just do it on their own.

Hi there,
Alice has just turned 10 months and the first 9.5 months DD would have two, 30 minute day sleeps and would go to sleep 10-10.30 at night. The days were so long, although the last 2 weeks DD has one day sleep at approx 11.30 for 90 minutes and is asleep for the night by 7.30ish. :)

DD is 12 months and has a nap at 8.30 for 1.5-2 hrs, then usually a 40 min nap around 1.30pm.

She is quite easy to get down in the morning - that's how I know she still needs 2.

I think DS transitioned to one nap at around 14 months.

Right on 12 months, a couple days before his party... with his party scheduled right on his new nap time

DD2 is 14 months and I think she might be getting close to dropping a nap because she's not getting to sleep until nearly 9pm. But the trouble is she stll gets tired in the morning and there's no way she'd last all afternoon without a nap.

DD1 was still having 2 naps at 18 months, but she then stopped naps altogether around 2 yrs.

Mrs Potts, that's exactly my struggle. He's so tired in the morning and is readdy to go down at about 9, but then if he sleeps for only 1.5 hrs he won't last all afternoon. But if he sleeps even for a short time mid-arvo he's hard to get down at night. arrgh! i'm trying to put him down at 10.30, b which stage he's sooooo tired, but he's not consistently sleeping long enough to get through the afternoon even then...

Hi!

Just to let you know, our DS is 18 months and still on 2x sleep per day of around 45 mins to an hour. Mind you, he doesnt sleep very well of a night (wakes 3-4 times) so I dont know if this is because hes getting the extra sleep during the day?

I wouldnt worry about it, they let you know when they're ready

DD still has two 1.5 - 2 hour naps a day and shows no signs whatsoever of changing. She is 17 months next week.

My son is 13mths and we are working on the one sleep a day. It has been difficult as he would go down for his morning sleep around 10am - 12pm. He would then be ready for a nap around 3pm, but it became a struggle with him. He would go down ok, but then just play or cry for a while, I found I was spending the afternoon trying to get him to take a nap.

I kept extending the morning sleep my 15minutes each day, atm he goes down at 11:30, straight after an early lunch and then sleeps for 2hours. He is cranky around 5pm and by the time we have dinner, bath, Bf, stories he is just about falling asleep in my arms. The tricky part now is getting him into bed awake.

Not sure if this helps, but you just need to keep them busy so they earn their sleep. I do my house work in the am as he loves to follow me around with the vacuum, helps me make the bed etc and that seems to exhaust him and me lol.
