My nephew is almost 5 and we set a $50 limit, so I did up a cooking pack for him:
* A kids cookbook (around$20)
* An apron ($10)
* Utensils - brightly coloured, got a stack from one of the cheap shops
* Bowls - same as above
I think its something purposeful that he will enjoy as opposed to toys (he has way too many!):)
Polly pocket, littlest pet shop, Barbie three musketeers anything, baby born, tinkerbell, dress up costume Disney princess.
These are all things my DD1 is in love with as well as my 6 yo god daughter hth
My 5 year old loves:
Twirly dresses (look up tutus on various kids clothing sites)
Books about absolutely anything
Dirt and anything to dig dirt with
Hair clips

because there 9 kids, last year everyone got cheap crappy stuff that just got thrown away .. so thats not going to happen this year:xmas:
I have 2 nieces 15 and 10 so have gone through all those toy stages for b'days and christmas'.
At 5 I wouldn't get the crimper, she'll burn herself and won't know how to use it.
Definately anything barbie, fairies, carebears (if they still have them lol), tea sets or similar play sets, playdoh, dressups a good one, I saw these cute In the night garden soft dolls. Anything she can play with will be a hit.
When she starts school colouring books are good for the stockings, books, hair ties, jewellery toy sets, jewellery box (and still barbie ofcourse) Now they want ds games, dvd'd, cd's, board games, my older niece loves make-up, perfumes.
$50 is heaps for a toy, you could get a barbie doll for about $20!!

I would say the crimping set is too old. I guess it would depend on the child but it would suit my 10yr old DD rather than my 6yr old twins.
Depends on what she's into. My twins are getting a really nice jewellery box each that I found at a chemist and necklaces and bracelets etc. (But the jewellery is cheapie stuff) Planning on getting them one of those fake Pandora Bracelets next year. They absolutely love Littlest Pet Shop and polly pocket stuff. Umm they also like Barbie/Bratz, books and even love getting new clothes. They would love the Hannah Montana Movie which I might get.
Maybe it makes a difference having an older sister. But they aren't into baby dolls anymore. They like fairies (as in tinkerbell etc) stuff but would be horrified to get The fairies, Dora, In the night garden anything. They like top 50 music but that might be because they are used to dancing to the popular stuff.

I love the cooking set idea you could include the recipe and ingredients to make something simple too

Lots of art stuff would be great as I'm sure she'd be very into drawing by now -- sketch pads, special pens/crayons, colouring books etc. KMart has a great selection.

Really nice swimmers - my DD goes through so many and always gets super excited when she gets a pretty new pair.
Girly lego (yes you can get it, just like normal lego only pink and purple)

Instead of the crimping set, if she's into hair you can get dolls that are just a head & shoulders that they can do hair styling on. DD is getting a cheapo version at christmas, but I think I saw them in ToysRUs.
Crafty stuff. DD got into imagination play at 4 or 5 years and liked putting on puppet-style shows for us, so perhaps a puppet stage or similar?
Smaller but good doll houses with basic sets of furniture usually retail for between $60 to $100.
I agree on the twirly dress. Doesn't have to be fancy but anything with the skirt that twirls out was a hit here.

a jewellry box and some jewelry.
My DD is 5 and loooooves necklaces and bracelets.
She also love her jewelry box withe the dancing ballerina.
I got the box for $25 and then you have heaps to spend on the jewelry.
Diva, cotton on kids and kmart all sell kids jewelry.
