View Full Version : Potty Training
When did everyone start toilet training and what worked for you. My DD is 14 months old and my MIL thinks we should already be training. I'm confused as to how to go about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

wow 14 months is VERY early... i trained lochie about 22 months but he used to hold his wee for up to 8 hours and ended up with a urine infection and a visit to hospital... we saw a paed and she said she doesnt see the need to train much before 2 and a half,,, lochie is now that age and i have started again,,, he wont poo in the potty but has only had one wee accident in the 4 weeks we have been doing it,,, entirely up to the individual but the later age worked much better for us!
I thought it was was way too early yet as well. But you know what MIL's are like. According to her all her kids were toilet trained at 18 months. I highly doubt it. I think I will wait till DD is about 2. That sounds much more resonable to me.

It's strange but most of the Grandmas I know always talk about toilet training early. And I think it's a great idea, I mean really we didn't have disposables not that long ago so that's definately a factor surely.
My Mum swears and my Auntie backs it up that she started sitting me on the potty when I was able to sit up on my own at around 9 months. As soon as I did something in it she went crazy excited and I never pooped my nappy shortly after that! Pee pees obviously took a lot longer but I'll def be trything this with my 5 month old as then there will be no reluctance to sit on a potty when the time comes.
Can't hurt can it?
My 22 month old sits on the potty and the toilet if the mood strikes but hasn't actually done anything on it and I really need to be more consistent too but it's been hard with the baby arriving in June this year.
When my hubby has some days off it's going to be knickers for her and some potty time!
Wish me luck!

I've introduced the concept of the potty to my DD who is 16 months, not expecting to go any further than that AT ALL. She sits on it and smiles at me, and says `poo' and thinks it's heaps of fun, and that's as far as I'm willing to take it at this stage. She's very young.
14 months is even younger - there's no way I would be starting that early.
Plus there is a lot of research now to show that if you push your child into TT too early then they can actually be set back because of it. All the current literature and research recommends no earlier than 18 months unless your baby is CLEARLY ready for it.

Agree. Alot of people back then swear they had their children toilet trained very early. Makes sense too, who would want to be changing and cleaning cloth nappies for 3 years lol. Disposibles have made it so much less of a job and thats why I think people are leaving toilet training to a much later date.

coop started TT when he turned 2. he is now fully toilet trained including nights. i wouldnt do it until they showed interest in the toilet and dont like the feeling of being wet or dirty from the poo.

My DD doesn't seem to be showing any signs at 20 months. I'm starting to think about it though which is why I'm here :)

we started at 15 mths,a mths after he mastered walking.
we used the potty at the start, but ds1 refused that so we bought the little toilet lid that fits on the big one.
we also had plenty of Rudie time which resulted in plenty of accidents.
my tip is have plenty of patience.try using a sticker chart or treat system, most of all praise lots lots lots it helps with their confidence.
i think the earlier you start the less hassles you will have by the time they are going to kindy.
all the best with TT:wave:

I have just strted with DD a couple of weeks ago. She has only had a couple of accidents and we have had no need for a treat system. She is also old enough to know to pour her potty into the big toilet when she is done which is a great advantage. I have had the potty sitting in the bathroom for the past six months and I started by always talking about it and then occassionaly she would want to use it. I waited till the warm weather because it is easier for them to run around with just knickers on. DD is 2 and 4 months. It only took her a week to get the hang of it. This is the advantage to starting later.
