Hi everyone,

My husband and I are hoping to move from the Gold Coast to Launceston within the next couple of weeks, we have a 10 month old daughter and I would love be part of a mothers group!

Also, can anyone give me any advice on areas in Launceston? Whats Ravenswood like?

miakat
10-02-2010, 13:19
I don't want to offend anyone and I know people who live in Ravenswood but to be honest I would avoid the area. Always in the news for bad things happening. There are plenty of other areas which are good though.

waterlily

I too don't want to offend. But DO NOT go to Ravenswood. Nice ares include: Prospect, Kings meadows, Newstead, Trevallyn, South and West Launceston, Youngtown, Riverside.

My DD is almost 6 months I have to find a mothers group here myself. :p

I too don't want to offend anyone but I would avoid northern suburbs eg Ravenswood, Rocherlea, Waverly type areas... but it all depends on what you want. You will find that rent is cheaper in those areas. Invermay could be a good middle ground between northern area and city? It is in good walking idstance to the CBD but would not have a high instance of "trouble"...... more expensive areas are West Launceston (kind of bad bus service though), Trevallyn (reasonable bus service in lower Trevallyn)..... Kings Meadows and Youngtown are a bit futher away but good bus service. Kings Meadows has its own shopping centre and little shops so you don't have to go to the CBD as much. Most areas have playgroups and child health centres. If you will be after a doctor maybe try and find one early cos a lot of them have closed books and it' shard to find one when you need one suddenly. Oh and on that note there is a good naturopath here http://www.naturaltherapypages.com.au/therapist/6383 (our family goes to her). Hope you find a place to live that you like and are happy and comfy in!:D

Thank u so very much for telling me!!!

Its hard to get an idea of an area over the net, we will start looking straight away in the suburbs you have all suggested, I am very grateful :D

Hope to be there soon :smiliedance:

We have finally arrived! Our funiture is in transit so we had to take a rental extremely quick... I tried my best to get into the suburbs suggested but couldnt get many viewings to fit in with my furinture arriving. We got to see two places in our price range ($260), one in Trevallyn, I loved the area but the house was very low quality... carpets with holes, kitchen falling apart, even the bathroom had masking tape holding some of it together! So we had to take the other which is in Mowbray, I can see the difference in the suburbs, we are luckily moving into a quiet cul-da-sac with elderly neighbours so hopefully it will be fine, though we will be looking to move when the lease is up :) maybe to longford...

Thank you very much for all your help girls, I drove through Ravenswood, and I can see why you said to maybe choose somewhere else, it just had a different feel to the other places we went in Launceston.

We move into our little house on Wednesday and are happy with it, we have room for a vegie garden and its a neat little place.

My little monkey is 1 in 2 weeks and would love some friends to play with, maybe we could do a trip to the park sometime...

It is a mums group more than a playgroup so its suited from birth up. I find it great to have a chat there instead of going to playgroup and running around flat out.

Oh Babymumma thats so exciting!

I remember my last 3 weeks, very slow, I thought she was never going to arrive, but she actually came on her due date. Now I find it hard to believe I ever lived a day without her. If you ever need a chat, Im always here :)

Hi Kimberlei83.

I'd love to arrange a play date. I'm finding it hard here to meet other Mums to chat and other kiddies for my little one to have fun with. That's why I thought maybe on here there might be some private groups out there that some Mums have organised????

Kimberlei83

Hello, I've been in Launnie for a while, but now that my daughter is a little older (almost 2yo) she's getting quite bored staying home with me when her Daddy goes to work. I know it would be good for her to meet other toddlers in our area but we don't know anyone close by (Kings Meadows) with little children around her age that she can play with. If anyone else has a bored or lonely little toddler and they like to go to the park (or somewhere suitable for them to play) together, I'd be happy to walk her there a couple of afternoons a week, weather permitting lol

26-06-2011, 07:09

Hi Sally75, it really depends on whether my DH is working or not as I can't go too far without the car lol.
If I get the car off him I can take DD to City Park or somewhere near town, thats usually a nice trip for the kids. Otherwise if I have to walk its really only Kings Meadows, but I haven't looked around for a playground in my area yet as we've only been going to the dog park so my fur-daughter isn't left out... :p
Send me a message if you have any ideas. DH has a few days off this week if you're keen :)

Hi everyone, Just wondering if a get together is being organised soon? I have a 2 and a half yr old... and just found out another on the way, but too soon to be telling family and friends so a local mums group would be great!

sharn
16-07-2011, 18:51
Not many people on here recently so no get togethers that I know of... trying to organise a 'play date' myself at City Park, but been unsuccessful with poor weather, clashing timetables and the flu making it difficult to meet up.
I myself don't know of any regular organised mums' groups apart from Premmie Playgroup but your child health nurse should know of a couple. Otherwise if you want to start one, or just meet up for the kids to have a play one day my DD and I would be happy to join you :)

Hi everyone, we (hubby, DS-3, DD - 10mths and myself) are moving to launceston from Wollongong in 3 weeks (so excited). We are currently applying to rent a few different houses, we have found ome good one (my brother has inspected them for us) in riverside, mowbray, and youngtown.. fingers crossed we get picked :)

Anyways when we get down there and settle I would love to meet up with some other mums, so my kids can make some friends.

I am also hoping to get my business back up and running. I own, and run Howe Lovely Photography. I love my job :) other than being a mum, I love that too

Best of luck with your house hunting :fingerscrossed: I've been trying to organise something for a while now, so if you are interested in a play-date when you're finally settled in feel free to message me :) It's surprisingly difficult to meet other parents of very young children in Launceston (especially when you're a stay-at-home Mum). I've been here in Laun for over 12mths and only know one other Mum!

Hello everyone :)

I would be very keen on a mothers group/play date also. I actually found this site searching for a mothers group in the Launceston area. Myself and DS (15 months) would love to meet some new people in our local area. So I'll definately put my hand up to be a part of a meet-up of some sort :)

Hi ladies, I would like to introduce you to our organisation. CHAT is a not for profit network of groups run by parents for parents.
We have groups such as pram walking or CHAT n Play coffee groups. We can provide a network of information, parenting resources and insurance cover for your group for only $10 per family per year. Each group is autonomous - ie you decide when you would like to meet and what you would like to do. We provide support and promotion. I would be happy to meet with and talk to you about what we do. You can view our website www.chatas.org.au (http://www.chatas.org.au) or email me chat_north@iprimus.com.au
We also advocate for families. Our current mission is to save the Child Health nurses from any reduction in services. Please feel free to talk any of this over with me. Kind regards, Tanya - Northern Regional Coordinator, CHAT:smiliedance:
