I used NUK with DS1 & DS2 before the whole BPA stuff was alerted.

This time around, I am looking at either Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles or Avent bottles as I am planning to BF with occasional FF.

Have you used either brand??
How did you find them??
Which is better???

I am a fan of the Tommee Tippee ranges and have used them extensively in every other aspect with my 2 boys. But I'm not afraid of Avent and I hear they are pretty good??

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you :santa:

The shape of the Avent teats aren't very good for BF babies. Even for full time FF babies they are still an awkward shape for them to latch on well and reduces their suction.
The Avent teats also have a tendancy to be either way too fast or way too slow. The difference between the step 1 teat and the step 2 is often too much for some babies (mine included) so it is hard to find an inbetween.
I used an Avent breast pump but ended up storing the milk in the avent bottles (or transfering it to a freezer bag) and then feeding DD using the Tommee Tippee ones.

That said the avent bottles are great and the small ones (120ml I think) were a perfect fit for my bottle holder. i could get 2 bottles with the flat caps on into my holder so I could have 2 smaller feeds with me when I went out (rather than one big bottle of milk that would get wasted if I only used part of it). I would still transfer the milk to a TT bottle though as DD fed better from them.

Thanks Teegzie.

That is the reason I have been looking into the Tommee Tippee bottles, as they seem to have the most 'natural' shape/functioning teat if still BF. I always thought that the NUK teats seemed so unnatural to a babies sucking action, so wanted to try something different this time around.

i found with my bub he was only breastfed for the first 6 months then i had to put him on formular. he wouldnt take any bottle except closer to nature no matter how hungry he was hed take a suck then tantrum.
but with the closer to nature ones he seemed to accept them straight away, and it is only now that he is starting to accept other bottles, tho there is still a clear preference for closer to nature, if he sees one of those bottles on the bench and i make his bottle with avent ones he refuses it. grr.

Thanks elsmith. It's interesting isn't it! TT one's do just seem to be closer to the breast shape so I imagine they would compliment BF the most.

We've used the Closer to Nature since he was born. I used them for expressed milk and he took straight to it

We are still BF and he has water from the bottle. I think because the Closer bottles are flexible and bend and shape like your own breast that helps

I would go with them again if I ever had another one

this is what they have actually been designed for!!
they even feel more natural than avent ones. i use these, my best friend uses avent with her ds. they just look... uncomfortable....

i cant recommend the tt closer to nature bottles enough - they are bpa free and you can get the cutest little in bottle formula holders...

ALSO strangely enough, i also used an avent breast pump (was given to me) stored my ebm in avent and then transferred to tt to feed.
i think they are just all round good bottles, i cant speak highly enough of them!

i used the Avent breast pump and transfered too.
i think the Avent teats are to hard where as the tommee tippee ones are really soft and stretchy like the breast.

I'm an Avent user, purely because when all hell was breaking loose and I couldn't BF, my mum went out and bought be an Avent electric steriliser and bottles etc.

Had given her EBM in TT bottles but ended up with Avent. They work for us (once I worked out how to stop the colic valves leaking)

I have an Avent electric pump, but use Tommee Tippee bottles.

I have an Avent bottle but it's a bit pointy and weird looking, whereas the TT ones look more like boobs.

It could be all marketing talk, though, who knows.

I used nuk with my boys and then with DD avent were the only ones she'd take after tryin every bottle there was.
I found with TT though that the teat goes down and they stop and you have to pull it back out if that makes sense? did anyone else find this, i have noticed it with a few babies??

I don't like the Avent teats as the flow just doesn't seem to work for DS2 at all, it pours out the side of his mouth. I bought some wide neck NUK teats and they fit fine with no leaks and the flow is perfect for Mr. Guzzle Guts lol.

We've only ever used Avent & never had a problem with leaking ect.

I dont like TT & cant hold them.

:iagree:I bought all Avent bottles & Teats for DS when he was a newborn and he would not drink from the Avent teats. We use Avent bottles and Pigeon teats and he drinks out of them fine.

DS is 4w old and occasionally has a bottle of EBM, I tried both TT and Avent bottles and teats. Before using them I preferred the TT ones for the same reason as everyonehas mentioned, similar to the breast etc.

DS does not agree he ended up coughing and spluttering and heaps more wind with TT bottles and teats. Has no probs with the avent ones.

Thanks so much for all your replies ladies :shakehands:

But now I think I am more confused. Maybe I should try the NUK wide neck ones then??? What do people think of these?? I know I never had a prob with either of the boys with the NUK standard teats - esp with the whole teat collapsing, that would drive me crazy! I just thought the TT would be good to coincide with BF due to their shape. But maybe it doesn't matter???

If a teat is collapsing baby is sucking extreamly hard or the teat is to slow.

We used prem nuk teats when the Trip's first started suck feeds, they can control the flow better. We changed to Pur a few days before coming home cause the nuks were to slow.

I used TT with my first baby and found that they were great when still breastfeeding, she preferred them over the Advent. However for my second bub I found a wide necked glass bottle (Coddlelife) and have had no problems going between breast and bottle - would definatley recommend Coddlelife if considering using glass bottles, or TT if sticking to the plastic ones.

I used Avent bottles but my DD hated the teats on them so at the advice of a pharmacy midwife as i already had heaps of avent bottles we brought pigeon wide neck teats and they fit perfectly with the avent bottles. the pigeon teats are much more flexible (like the TT ones).
Also ended up buying some pigeon bottles after a while too and they are good to use also.

i use the TT and i still believe the bottle specifically its shape was the reason I could combine bf and ff for 4 months and after stopping BF for over 2 weeks successfully relactated to BF for 2 more months

i tried DS on avent and it gave him shocking wind (but he was a newborn so who really knows if it was specifically the bottle?!?) have an avent breast pump, have the whole avent set up but don't use it and went out and brought bulk TT bottles a month after giving birth

i think every baby is different - also i agree with TripleTime as the TT bottles are an awkward shape so DS find its really hard to hold the bottle himself and they are awkward looking ;)

DD was BF but required a bottle a couple of times a week from about 3 months.

She refused both Tommee Tippee and Avent and I had to see a feeding expert for advice.

She suggested Pigeon (also BPA free), which she also said is recommended by alot of midwives for BF babies and even FF babies who have attachment issues.

DD took to it instantly. My sister was also told to change her FF baby from Avent to Pigeon because she had feeding issues, and that was a success to.

The wide neck pigeon teats also fit the Avent bottles. Each baby is different though and it can be trial and error.
