I was wondering if ACT mums are aware of, or have noticed a recent rise in Hand, foot and mouth disease cases in Canberra at the moment? A doc we saw in Calvary said to us there is a bit of an epidemic at the moment.
It must be a different strain to the one my DD caught 11 years ago, as she caught it from my toddler ds. It has an incubation period of 3-5 days, and usually only strikes once in a lifetime.
DS (2.5yrs) got it VERY badly, he had a high temp first, and then his mouth was so full of blisters and ulcers that he could not drink or eat for 2-3 days unless we used an anaesthetic from the doc and panadol (and even then, he was reluctant). He hade spots on feet, ankles, hands and bum, and was in heaps of pain, and grizzled and cried almost constantly, even during the night.
A week later, DD (14 yrs) got similar (but less) spots, but apart from a little pain when eating, was OK with it, and no temp.
Now, I have noticed one blister on my own nose, and one on the inside of my lip, but absolutely no feelings of unwellness, and no pain. Adults are not supposed to get this disease, as our immune systems normally fight it off.
Make sure you wash your, and your kids hands often, and try not to let them put things in their mouths at playgroups and daycare, etc. Good luck!
