I am talking about the 'talc' free type (cornflour only).

Not many people I know use baby powder, but I think it was more popular, say 20 years ago, would that be about right?

I tend to use BP at night after DS's bath as he will sleep the longest then. I dont yet use it during the day, but am thinking about it.

Is there any difference b/w BP and nappy rash creams?

I don't know how much difference it makes to nappy rash and think it all depends on how you use the stuff. If you over use it and don't wash it off properly it can cause more problems than it fixes.

I find it great for sweaty feet on a hot day! :D

Babies skins don't need anything added to them IMO

What type of problems??

It can soak up moisture and cake in skin folds and cause that area to break down and cause infection.

I see the powders as useless and potentially harmful. The fact that the fine dust can enter lungs and cause lifelong lung damage means that for us powders were never used. I just use zinc cream for nappy rash and it works beautifully each and every time.

I've never used it and was given some baby powder still sitting on the change table

I figured it was more useful when only cloth nappies were used and it helped create a barrier between babys skin and wet nappy.

Doesn't really apply now with the absorbency of disposable nappies or Modern Cloth Nappies.

I use it for nappy rash (not that he gets nppy rash often) - DS is in cloth so we can't use zinc.

I like the smell. :)

It can be dangerous to put in the perenial area of babies, particularly girls and uncircumsized boys, as the powder can get into the foreskin of the penis or enter the vagina and cause irritation and infection...

I stay away from Baby Powder... I just use berts bees bum cream for nappy rash and it is the best thing ever. I don't bother with anything else

Is all the above the same for cornflour BP or just talc??

It is the same for both.

I use it myself in the morning if I know it's going to be a hot day, but never on bubs, she doesn't need it.

No I never use any type of powder and it's actually not recommended for babies anymore because it's been shown they can breath it in and yes cause infections down there. As for nappy rash, only thick layers of a good cream will help this and is alot safer and less messy. I use Sudocream and swear by it and believe me I've tried everything out there.

Hmmm. Time to rethink powder then!

I wonder what I could use instead that won't damage the nappies...

Just to try and clarify...

Cornflour is fine and safe to use. Just buy the stuff from the cooking isle, 100% cornflour.

Baby Powders with talc, are not safe. It is the possible substances not fully removed from the talc itself which cause problems.

Talc is a no-no, cornflour is fine :)

We used talc for a couple of days and DS ended up with an impacted anal gland, so don't anything at the moment. Just keep his bottom dry and clean.

Yep, we use BP here. Always have, always will.

Seriously, how much of the stuff would you need to be puffing around for a baby to breathe it in? It's all common sense really.

We used cornstarch with every nappy change until DD was about six months old. I'm not sure why - we just started and always did. I don't know that we will for the next bub. My DP was the one behind that, really - he just always used to use it!

Mrs Potts - It's not just about the dangerous surrounding talc when inhaled, which doesn't need to be a huge amount to cause big problems. But there is also the concern (though at this point there's no evidence to fully support it, but it's a big concern either way) that talc may be linked with ovarian cancer. Have a read of THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ford-EB-ED-EF-Falcon-Fairmont-Wagon-RHS-Tail-Light_W0QQitemZ350275576891QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_C ar_Parts_Accessories?hash=item518e0d243b#ht_1712wt _1042).

Considering that plain old cornflour from the cooking isle is actually cheaper and will last longer than commerical baby powders, wouldn't you rather take the cheaper option knowing that it does the same job at a cheaper price and it's safer?

We use corn flour from the pantry. Mostly because its cheaper & we go through SO MUCH of everything.
