I know I tend to get it when pregnant... but it has not made me sick. Hope you feel better soon :hugs:

My mum, when pregnant with me, also had protein in the urine. I have looked into it and it seems to fall under the category of pregnancy induced hypertension, preeclampsia or toxemia (all three terms are interchangeable). It's characterised by swelling, high blood pressure and protein in the urine.

That's really all I know about it - except that my mum just had to have bed rest and was induced with me at 40 weeks (I was a healthy 7lb 3 baby). I'm sure your doctor will get back to you if it is anything sinister. In the meantime take it easy and put your feet up! :)

I had an antenatal appointment and I had high blood pressue, Protein in my urine and a bit of swelling, My gp sent me up to the Hospital to get it checked out and when they checked my BP it was back to normal so they wernt concerned about the other. I had a check up one week later and still fine. I only think its a concern if you have other symptoms. It is quite common for pregnant women to have protein in their urine,

Chin up your gp would let you know if there was any great concern

Take care

new_mummy82 I can see why your worried. Poor thiing. I am only 17 weeks but the past 2 antenatal appointments i have been to i have had protein in my urine. BP is ok.............The midwife keeps asking me "do you have thrush" which i dont.........So i dont understand why i always have protein in my urine......Should i be worried about pre-exclamsia and things like that? I have been told that unless you have other reasons for it, protein in the urine is not normal :S so im confused....I wish we pregnant women got more information about things like this. My midwife wont tell me anything!

sometimes protein in the urine can mean a urine infection i had it in both pregnancies but only had pre eclampsia in one pregnancy.

Women do occasionally get a +ve for protein without having anything 'wrong' with them. But married with other symptoms it can be an indication of pre eclampsia. Your blood pressure will be the main other indicator and this is where continuity of carer is vital... only a known care provider knows what is and isn't normal for you. Your current urine results and blood pressure need to be compared against what is normal for *you*. I hope you are lucky enough to have continuity of care or carer.

I got one ++ protein reading in my last pg. I hadn't been able to give a sample to my m/w so when I saw her colleague at a relaxation class I gave one to her instead. When we got the result she had a bit of a panic and rang my m/w to ask what she wanted her to do. We arranged another appointment with my m/w the next day to check my urine and blood pressure again (blood pressure was fine that evening). By the next day everything read 'normal' for me, not even a + nevermind ++!

That explains why I had protein then as I was always getting UTI's.

protein in your urine can be a sign of infection. later in your pregnancy it can also be a sign of preeclampsia if its your blood pressure is high. if you have protein in your urine but your blood pressure is normal, your urine sample will be sent to the lab to check if you have an infection. when you're pregnant, they routinely check for sugar, protein, ketones, etc but may only check more if there is a reason to suspect that something's a miss.

hmmmmm wonder when they will send my urine to the lab to rule out infection seeing as every test i have had has been +ve for protein.............. :S
