Hi Guys,
For those of you who microwave your bottles to heat them......do you microwave the bottles with their teats on?
I just read some instructions on one of the brand bottles I have and it said 'when microwaving ensure to remove the lid and teat, failure to do so may cause an explosion.'
I've always microwaved them with the teats still on worried that I would knock over the bottle and lose the formula.....plus I then give it a shake & pour a few drops to check the temp.....and quite often I need to give it a few more seconds to warm it enough. Should I be removing the teats?

I use avent bottles and microwave with the teats on. My teats are prob about 4mths old now and are still fine.
Not sure about other brands though.

ive never microwaved with teats on.
no idea why i do that i just do :o
I leave them on but I unscrew it a little so it can vent, I only microwave the water then add formula and shake.
I have the safety first bottles. I microwave with the teats on and have never had a problem!

I leave them on when i am heating cows milk , but with formula bottles I only microwave the water then add formula and shake.
I have never left the teats on either, hmmm don't know why, i just thought they couldn't go in the microwave.

I have my formula scoops counted out in a dispenser and bottles of water in the fridge. So I just take off the teat/lid and zap the bottle, pour in the formula and shake well. All ready to feed in less than a minute.
I use the Avent bottles and have always done it this way, for no particular reason. The only thing is Ethan takes a while to get used to the cold teat, but with a few shakes of the warm milk it's soon fine.

I've always done it without teats...never thought they could go in the microwave! I'd be worried about them not being able to vent properly and exploding, like the instructions said?
I've got the Avent bottles and microwave with the teat on. I would just check the brand you use because I imagine that they are all different. Maybe some of the cheaper ones you can't??
Mind you - most nurses tell you off for microwaving at all. It's the hot spot thing. Just make sure you shake/swill well. :)

I think the issue with microwaving with the teats still on is the possibility of a hot spot on the teat itself. If you heat for a short period of time it is probably very unlikely to happen, but if your bub likes really warm milk (like mine did!) they reccomend leaving the teat off. The teat can heat up really quickly, and as you usually don't touch the teat with your hand you might not notice the hot spot on the teat & burn bubs mouth.
I don't think it damages the teat to put them in the microwave - it is just manufacturers covering their backsides for 'IF' you are unlucky enough for a hot spot to occur on the teat.

Exactly Charli's mum! A nurse in the paed ward told me that one of the biggest admissions they get is for children with the roof of their mouths terribly burnt because parents microwave bottles with teats on. Because microwaves dont heat evenly, when there is a little water in the teat and it heats at a faster rate than the rest of the water then it is scalding when the baby drinks:no: . Too scary an option for me. I microwave water only and then add formula as microwaving also cooks the protein in the formula and kills many of the nutrients.

Was just reading this thread out of curiosity. I don't heat my bub's bottles I serve them at room temp. I just have the bottles filled with boiled water for the day and then scoop in the formula at feeding time. That's what they did in the hosp. does anyone else do this??
I heat the water without the lid on and add the formula after the water is heated. Apparently it kills nutrients to nuke the formula......or thats what I read.
