Hi everyone,
Wow there are a few of us that are preparing to meet bub or have met bub. Can't wait to hear the stories!
I need a little advice. I am due 13/08/05. At my check-up last night my midwife told me that bub is only 1/5 engaged (has been for 2 weeks)and that bub wasn't a small bub. She added not to expect anything to happen over the next few days. We had a chat and then we discussed an induction should I go over. Now, I know that is the last thing myself, partner and midwife want, we were hoping for a naturally beginning labour and active birth which would remain relatively intervention free (I have remained positive). Up until now I have never considered the induction prospect. The hospital policy is no longer than 10 days past the due date. I have a couple of questions if anyone can help.
1) I have heard that when your induced it is quite an intense birth? Which could lead to other interventions?
2) Has anyone been induced with other bubs previously? If so and if you don't mind sharing your story I would love to hear your experience?
I know I am not overdue just yet but I love to be armed with some prior knowledge. It may seem I am panicking (I'm not just yet) but I was just hoping for some more promising news by now in relation to bubs position. I know its not unusual for first bubs to go over as well. I am drinking raspberry leaf tea, putting clary sage oil in the bath, burner, massage blend and having sex. Any more info anyone has would be appreciated.
Thanks again, enough rambling from me. I hope everyone is feeling well and taking it easy (with or without bub just yet!)

Hi there Mumofmash, I haven't been induced, but I am like yourself, a little depressed for a few reasons, 1 my iron is on the lower side which bothers me very much, as I have just started taking iron a couple of weeks ago, and had only been taking it a couple of days when I had the blood test... As you can lose quite alot of blood during birth this is quite scary, especially as I don't take blood for my own reasons... 2 I too was told that my baby was quite a good size, as this is my 3rd and it is a boy, I am told boys are usually bigger than girls, I am a bit nervous, I know I should be happy as being a good size is a good thing as everything is obviously doing its job, I would still like my baby to be a nice size as they don't really look like newborns if they are too big, I feel selfish... I suppose I am just feeling like **** as everything is uncomfortable, I feel heavy, I can't sleep, I don't fit anything and refuse to buy anything I can't wear after bub is born, the heartburn, the constant comments from people about how big i am and how many babies are there in my belly... I guess I am just getting really impatient... I have started the clary sage in a bath, It is quite strong ha!!! I add a couple of drops of lavender... I walk a bit, drink plenty of raspberry leaf tea and do the whole sex thing in the hope it might get things moving soon... I know I am not due for another 11 days, but they say you are classed as full term after 37 weeks... I love being pregnant, but am over it now, Just can't wait to meet the little person inside of me :p

ello there :D
I have been induced twice( dd 6, ds 4) and am due to be induced at 39 weeks with this bub. For me its the norm. I have hypertension in preg so the sooner the better.
Anyway on to the story.....
Babies were both induced via syntocin drip. You go to delivery room, have drip but in and within minutes you feel tightenings, within half an hour, they hurt! They increase the amount of med going into drip depending on strength of contractions. You will wear a monitor round your belly to measure this...interesting seeing the numbers go up indicating a contraction is coming
I had an epidural around this point as it HURT lol baby was posterior ( spine on spine, face up) and i couldn't cope, second time was normal, he was face down , no epidural :) still hurt lol
Felt sfa from there, and they reduced medication down to zilch so i could push and still feel pressure. First baby's birth took 9 hrs from insertion of drip, 2nd baby's birth took 4 hrs.
I think i would rather be induced at 10 days over rather than wait any longer and risk the placenta reducing its capabilities.
Cant think of anything else atm, that ammnesia thingy has set in so i forget it all in preparation for this baby's birth
HTH cheers Jen
Good Luck!

I have not been induced but my sister and two close friends of mine have beeb and I have seen good and bad. My sister did have quick, intense labours but so did my mum and I did also so that may not have been the cause for my sister. She was induced at 37/38wks due to blood pressure and kidney problems. My friends who where induced had problems though. Both had 24hr labours that ended in a c section but one of them had an 11pound baby!! The other has a family history of long labours and not being able to have natural births so a lot of it whether you are induced or not seems to be a family thing. I too was told that I did not have a small baby and he was 10 days over and still only 7 pound 3 so they can not be accurate on size. Also it is the head size that counts!! Hope this helps and has not scared you!!

Thanks for your responses so far.
Like you Haana- I am over it (all the same reasons as yourself). I guess thats partly why the news last night made me a little down. It has been really special being pregnant but I am ready now to meet this baby. I feel lucky so far to have had a healthy pregnancy and by all accounts so far it seems a healthy baby. And its true I would prefer to be induced at a time when my carer recommends rather than risk the health of my baby. Thanks Chantel- the stories don't scare me its just a matter of gaining as much knowledge as possible and everyone's views help me with that. So thanks everyone again!!
Hi mumofmash,
You could try acupuncture my midwife says by someone qualified in the area of preganancy the success rate is above 80%. I figured it was worth trying before being induced. She also said Clary sage oil as a massage oil and in the bath is quite effective.
Hope that helps,

I was induced with my second and it was very intense compared to the first. It was less painful as the first was posterior, but when I was induced my contractions started one and a half minutes apart. I was induced with gel on the cervix so it was a couple of hours after the gel went on that the contractions started. I was demanding an epidural as my first labour was 36 hours long and I thought that I would go insane if the intensity was going to last even a few hours. As it turned out the epidural was going in as she was trying to come out so I actually only used the gas as pain relief and it was okay. We had no interventions - she slid out with one push. In my first labour with no induction I had forceps and vaccum.
So - for your sake I hope that you don't need to be induced, but if you are, a positive way to approach it is that it is over MUCH quicker and you get to meet your baby MUCH quicker, which is, after all, the reason we go through all of this!! And remember - it will end!
