View Full Version : Unhappy Nappy Change Table Time

My 9mth old DS constantly gets upset if I don't let him squirm around on the change table. When I need him to stay on his back to change his nappy and prevent him from turning onto his tummy or sitting up (which he tries to do constantly, every nappy change, day or night), it ends in tears (his & nearly mine too).

I feel awful that he gets so upset when I try to keep him still and no amount of toys, distraction or kind tone of voice keeps him there long enough (especially hard when he's done a poo!!).

He loves being on his tummy & is commando crawling and nearly knee crawling too so is constantly on the go but it's just getting me down that it makes him so upset.

Any ideas on how to keep him still, on his back and without tears would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you:)

My DD was a nightmare to change for a while after she started crawling. Every nappy change was a battle. I'm sorry i don't know what advice to give other than distraction which you are doing and get help when you can, sometimes it becomes a 2 person job. Or change in stages, get the nappy off and clean up then take a break before trying to get the next one on.

It is a phase they pass through, one day my girl just stopped fighting it. i just realised one day it had been a few days since the last battle.

She's started doing it again recently at 17mths but thats a different story...

Sorry to tell you this but its just a stage they will get past. Both my DS's did this. It drove me insane. But by around 13mths they had the understanding to stay still for 2 seconds. (fast hands is the key!)

DS2 was worse than DS1 so I would put socks on each of his hands and he'd be so concerned about them being there (or trying to rip them off) that he would forget to kick and scream.

Good luck

Thanks so much ladies, I agree distraction is the key! Socks on the hands is a great idea - I'll try that next!!!

He's got an assortment of toys to distract him and we work our way through them quickly!!

I think it's more to do with preparation for bed that he's acting out about but good to hear that it'll pass!!!

Thanks again.
