View Full Version : Have you ever.....
co-slept in the cot with your child?
Ok so I got desparate yeterday after DS had been up all day and woke up after 40 mins of his nap when I was expecting 3 hours out of him! He didn't look like he was going to settle back down so in my desparate attempt to get a rest too, I did the only thing I could think of in my half asleep state and climbed into the cot with him. I would have brought him into my bed but there is no air con in my room and he is very active and would have been climbing or falling off my bed and neither of us would have had any sleep. It only dawned on me when we woke up how weird this was. So has anyone else done it? Is it even safe? I figured it has woodern slats the same as many adult beds so it should support my weight? It was surprisingly comfortable but I did miss having a pillow
Back when DD1 was a bit over a year old I used to hop in her cot quite a bit. DH wouldn't have her in our bed and I was pregnant with DS so very tired so the easiest thing in my mind was to hop in with her in the middle of the night. Clamouring into a cot when 8 months pregnant is not easy. We moved her into a bed to make it easier. I don't know if it is safe or not but it worked for us.
Hehe... I've crawled into DS cot before. His is really solid. :)
I've done it and so has DH....when we've been really desperate!

I haven't done it but I have seriously considered it before. The only thing that has stopped me is that I have a bad back and I don't think it would help it much if I was climbing in and out of a cot.
You have no idea how much better I feel knowing I'm not the only one who has ever done this! Now Im wondering why I never thought if it before?!

No... and I'm really quite surprised that so many people have!
I don't mean that in a negative way, I just didn't think it would be something people did.
I would have been scared it would break under my weight (mind you, I'm fat:p), and I seriously have no idea how I would have fit in there (even though I'm short).
I always took DD into my bed if I needed to.
I also had a caesarean though, so climbing in there would have been painful had I attempted it.

oooooooooo i was seriously considering it yesterday.... its a convertable to a toddler bed and looks sturdy.... LOL so happy im not the only one too.
Jeepers, you ladies must have some solid cots!
I would be freaked out that it would break!
Mine doesn't look like it would hold my weight, and i'm only 58kg. Also, I think my knees would be up under my chin, i'm a bit on the tall side  Mind you, DS isn't in the cot yet so perhaps when he is I will be able to sympathise!
 We have a cot that converts into a toddler bed too. I was freaked out the first time and thought it would break but it is totally solid and secure. I have heaps of room in there and I'm tall. DS is 1 next week so it's not like he's tiny either. I used to bring him into my bed before he started becoming mobile. If I did it now, he'd jump off the bed and I wouldn't be able to close my eyes because he'd get into something that he's not supposed to and I'd have no hope of getting him to sleep.

I've jumped in to have a cuddle, but haven't slept in it with her.
I haven't but DS slept in a portacot or bassinet full time when we were having sleeping issues!
To be honest I dont think I would even manage to get in there!! My legs are pretty stumpy, and DS would just be climbing on me and sticking his fingers in my eyes  Though when he was a little chicken i prob would have found a way!!
Good that you have found something that works for you.

I haven't climbed into the cot yet...lol
but both DH and I use to lay on the floor next to the cot (on a doona with a pillow) when I was 3mths - 9mths prg with DS2 as DS1 was a shocking sleeper and wouldn't selfsettle alone...but if we lay down on the floor next to his cot, he would go to sleep much quicker...
We stopped once DS2 came along and put DS1 into his own big boy bed...then we sat outside his door in the hallway so he could still see us, this only lasted about 1 wk before he started self settling and we no longer needed to be in the hallway...
I say do whatever gets you and bub some rest!
How weird lol, I have never even considered it. It's actually never come to mind you could even do that. Since dd was younger she has always co slept in our bed, she's fallen out heaps of times but we have one of those Asian styled beds. So it's like 20cm from the ground luckily. And besides dd's cot is only a $900 one from babies galore. Nothing too strong. Well I don't think it would hold me anyway. I'm 52kgs but her slats are thinner than adult.

 I would have agreed with you a week ago, Shiraaa! I'm not making a habbit of it but for those times (rare) when he wakes after 20/40mins of his nap, it's great so that we both get a rest :)
