hi all,
are weet bix ok for a 7 month old? i ran out of baby cereal and smashed up a weet bix and mixed it with water he seemed to love it. later i checked the nutritional table with the baby cereal and it seemed to be double if not triple the iron and other nutrient levels? i looked in ababy feeding book and it said it was ok...does any one know for sure???

Hi,
I gave my son weet bix and banana when he was 6mths old. He loved it then but now he's 19mths and hates it. I'm sure he'll be fine with it, but some children have had dry skin from it so I would keep an eye on his skin.
Good luck!!
Kylie
My mum told me that all I would eat when I was a baby was weexbix - and I turned out ok.

My mother used to feed it to my little brother, and I have given it to both my girls, although I'd tend to reach for the organic Vita-brits instead of weet-bix. They have no added sugar. They enjoyed it also.
My kids have both also had cooked rolled oats from about 6 months, and loved it, too. And it's miles cheaper than baby cereal, and you can mix fruit puree through it for them. They are now 15 and 5, and both still love a bowl of porridge for breakfast.
while its questionable as to whether it is actually a problem or not the book i refer to "breast, bottle and bowl" suggests no adult cereals until twelve months. This is mainly because the fibre content is too high for bubbas tum.

This seems to be a very good suggestion - Wheatgerm may irritate a baby’s bowel lining if tried before 9 months. It is not recommended to give high fibre cereals as these interfere with iron absorption. Adult BRAN-based cereals should be avoided until 2 years of age, because as well as inhibiting mineral absorption, too much fibre fills up the baby’s small stomach capacity and may cause a reduced energy intake. However, I understand that it is said that wholemeal bread can be tried after 9 months, and weet-bix may be OK after 9 months too...having said that, I am one for caution when introducing many of these 'problem-causing' foods! and eg. even though it is recommended that dairy foods [i.e. yoghurt, custards etc] can be given after 9 months, I have always erred of the side of caution there and waited until much later than that - but that's just me!
I think if you contact Sanitarium, I have been told that they will tell you that 9 months is their recommendation for giving weet-bix [wheatgerm being the problem]
cheers

Yes. I also read this in "Breast Bottle Bowl". We did not introduce our daughter to Weet Bix until about 13 months. She and her daddy eat Weet Bix together in the morning. They both have it soggy with warm milk. I actually don't eat Weet Bix myself, but those two seem to love it. It has become a daddy daughter thing :)
Hi Girls, I cant find the stuff here....but when I was back in Oz last month I gave some to O and he screwed his face up. I had an early childhood visit and I told the nurse what solids I'm giving O...he's nearly 8 months..and she said to avoid the weet bix due to the wheat content so as to avoid food sensitivity issues...(Celiac etc).......so food for thought.......????

What I was just about to suggest
hey all :)
I seem to remember a case on the news (a LOOONNG time ago) - maybe 6 years??? where a young couple ran out of baby cereal and thought that wheatbix would be ok- but it actually killed their bubs (they had to go to court etc) - they were so upset - becuase Wheatbix is promoted as such a healthy thing!
I dont remember whether it was the fibre that was the problem- I seem to remember something about the salt content??? and that although it was REALLY low for adult consumption, it is quite high for bubs??? I wish I could remember!!!
I cant remember the exact details (I found it facinating at the time though... think I was in uni???) - maybe they fed it to bubs more than once??? or bubs was younger??? dont know...
just be careful I guess....

I also remember hearing that cereals such as Weet-Bix, Cornflakes and rice bubbles all had very high salt contents for babies and not to introduce them until around the 12 month mark. I can't remember where I read it though it was only very recently.

Hi,
Just wanted to add that my bubs has been having weetbix with cows milk and banana since she was about 10mths - she loves the stuff!! Never had a problem.
A friend's baby was suffering from constipation and a CHN told her to switch from baby cereal to weetbix because of the lower iron content.
