DS is 17 months old so I wasn't imagining that i'd have to start thinking about this for ages yet. Anyway, for about the last1-2 months he has been telling me before he does a poo that he's going to do it. More recently he says intermittently(sp?) throughout the day wee-wee, while pulling at his nappy, seemingly annoyed or frustrated. I think if he were wearing less it'd be off! Also, about 80% of the time DOES NOT want that nappy back on. In the last week or two he has stopped telling me about poo, I think this is because he hates having his nappy changed - would much rather be playing. He has had a couple of accidents recently (in the shower and just being naked around the house) and was most unimpressed with the whole situation!

I am wondering if these are normal things for him to be doing at his age? Do they mean he is ready? Or is it just something they start to do months before they are ready?? I DO NOT want to push him into anything adn want to be sure he is ready, but at the same time, don't want to hold off if he is ready, iykwim?!

I was thinking about getting one of those special toilet seats and some training pants just to have ready, but I don't know!

mine is 18mths and has started telling me too, the Child health nurse said that meant the message from the body was getting to their brain, she recommended to wait until summer, but i went out and got a seat thing for the toilet (havent really used it yet) and im going to give it a try....no harm in seeing what happens.

I agree, your sons are telling you they want to go so that is a pretty good sign they are ready. My boys both did what yours are doing now, my youngest is only 3 in December and has been going to the toliet for both since January (he had some accidents here and there but thats boys, they cant be bothed all the time can they). The advantage with them wanting to tell you is you dont need to worry about the training thing just the timing.

I say sieze the moment:fingerscrossed: .

Hi. My DD1 asked to use the toilet at 18 months and very quickly (within a few days) trained herself, virtually. My other kids have not been like this - it is a very individual thing. I think you have to seize the moment and give it a go, just be prepared to stick with it if they want to, and put up with some 'accidents' for a while.

Hmmmm.........since I wrote taht post ds has almost completely stopped telling me anything!! Untill yesterday - refused to have nappy back on so I left it off. He weed 3 times with no warning at all, but asked to use the toilet twice for poos(nothing happened). Of course I wasn't prepared and had to sit him on the big toilet seat! Don't they usually get the ahng of wee before poo??

yeah.. they usually get the hang of wees before poos, but i dont know with boys cause i have two girls! so, with my eldest girl (who is 3) she bascially toilet trained herself in about a week, which was great! poos took a bit longer, but thats normal, my youngest daughter is 22months and i hope to toilet train her in summer when its alot easier and less clothing to take off! she is starting to realise sometimes when she is wet, and hates having a wet nappy on, so, hopefully that will go well too! :fingerscrossed:

My daughter was doing exactly the same thing at your sons age. To the point that i used to have to put her down for her day sleep in full length bathers to stop her taking the nappy off. She toilet trained poo's first and then wee. She was fully toilet trained during the day at 2 1/2 and night time 2 3/4. we still get the odd night time accident ( she is now 3 1/2 ) but no big drama. My son who is 17 months has also started pointing at his nappy and saying 'poo' i just walk him to the potty and go through the motions. If he is playing away from me however he will happily do it in his nappy.
I think it is much easier if you have a child that talks early because they can tell you they need to go with enough time for you to actually get there. I dont have an real hang ups about toilet training , try jocks over the hot summer months and if it is going to happen it will if not leave it. Everyone gets there eventually.
