I'm considering a move and Melton looked like a cheap, open, clean, friendly place when I have visited briefly on occasions.
What can you tell me about the place?

hi
i know you live in my area so I can say this I hope
Melton is a bit of a hole cheap for a reason this is not just my opinion but it actually got a really bad write up in one of the local papers
also very isolated

I disagree. I am not a big fan of central Melton, but there is lots of nice areas. It is a youngish area so there is plenty of schools and children's services, it is on a city train line and if you drive, it is only about 45mins to the city. Like any outer suburban area, there is good and bad parts. As for all of the west of Melbourne being not so good, that is a comment from one of those on the other side of the Yarra.:laughing: I actually prefer the west to the east, it is less pretentious.

i grew up in Melton south and left there at 14yo in 1984. I liked it then but have no idea what it is like now.

No its from one living in the west who is sick of second rate services and roads
If you want any decent products its off to the city or yes the other side of the Yarra
The west in long overdue for a huge clean up just look at the entrance to Melb when coming from Geelong especially into Princess Hwy end it looks like a dump
Does anyone remember the guy that but up all the eye sore signs he was so right

I am interesting in knowing what it is you read in the write up, overitand36?
I think I'll have to go spend some days out there exploring and make up my own mind, as I'm getting such conflicting stories.
As someone said to me today though, it can't be as rough as 'Scumshine' (sunshine) Don't shoot me for saying that though!

If we had to shoot you we would be shooting a lot of people
Scumshine is correct
I think the write up was in one of the local papers that covers that idea maybe the Leader group but it was a while ago
Melton is not that bad, as was mentioned before it has good area's and bad area's... in general however you can pick up a decent house for a fraction of the price in the east. It is a little dry, flat and uninteresting however... I would consider looking at Bacchus Marsh which is a little further out but being a much older town with a more interesting landscape I consider it to have a little more "culture" plus there are great market gardens around which I love visiting on my way to Adelaide. I think it may be a little more expensive however.

Hi there,
I dont live in Melton however but my df and i was going to move there from ballarat.( where we are now) Im so pleased we didnt. We went and looked at a few lovely houses for half the price ( they were brand new) and after driving around looking at houses and seeing what you see when your doing that turns you off the area. put it this way its getting to the stage its like sunshine. My BIL's friend lives in melton and he cant wait to get out. His house has been broken in to so many times.
Please dont think im turning you off the area or anything i just dont want to see someone move in to a area then hate it with a passion.. Melton however has its good side and its bad.. if you go on the real estate website and look up rentals in melton and click on a house you like go right down to the bottom of the page and it will tell you all these reveiws people have said about the area and what they have gone through living there or weather they love it or not.
Another good thing to do is call the melton police and ask them what the crime is like there and how many call outs they would have it a day etc.
Hope this helps alittle bit.
Im happy we stayed in ballarat. But now we are looking at moving to Melbourne. ( We moved to ballarat for my partners job)

I haven't read all the posts and I don't want to offend anyone.. but this is my experience..
I was born in North Sunshine and lived there until around 10 then we moved to Tullamarine area (not really cos Tulla is any better then Sunshine, just logistics).
My dad has run his small business in St.Albans, Footscray, Sunshine & Niddrie. So I have spend a fair bit of time in both the West and North.
Honestly, most of these places are the same and I don't really think any are worse then the rest. You tend to find the older suburbs, like St. Albans etc have the higher levels are problems, voilence etc ; but the newer outer suburbs tend to be a little better because the ppl their are trying to build a family life for themselves. You will still get scumbags, but it just comes with the turf really.
If you are planning to stay on 'our side' then I don't think its a bad choice. I don't think it is any worse then say Craigeburn in the North.
The only concern with these places would be transport, schooling and facilities. The place we moved to in Tulla had limited public transport, so although it was a very nice suburb I had to spend a fair bit of time at Broady Train station - which is a worry.
It seems the West is the area for new migration, so in the next 10yrs or so you will probably see more of the Sudanese & other imigrants (sp) moving outwards from St. Albans & Footscray into Melton and alike like we have seen with the Asain imigrants.
This transition may be a bit hard, but as with all the other waves of imigrants a decade or so - you get to experience a whole new culture.
Personally, I find no appeal in the east and wouldn't life there for peanuts. I think we are blessed to expereince so many different cultures on this side of the tracks - it has helped me learn so much growing up and I wouldn't change it for anything.
Having said that, I decided to move out of MElbourne altogether. I find no appeal in moving to these estates with man made lakes and tiny blocks. For me; we have spent less and have 8 acres for any future kids to enjoy.
