In Victoria they have introduced new school reports.
Tonight I went to a parent teacher interview for my girl.
She had the day off to prepare for the interview, but I don't know how she would do that
Anyway she had a C for reading which means she is at the right level for grade one. She excels at reading but her comprehension isn't the best. She also needs to improve in all other areas eg. maths and spelling, speaking:eek: and writing. I am not worried as I know she just needs encouragement.
And more importantly she was given an excellent in terms of behaviour and attitude towards her class peers, teachers and the work itself.
I am very proud of my girl.
Are you happy with your childs school and how they report?

I think the new ratings make a lot more sense than the politically correct drivel we were getting before.

Talk about everything old is new again.

We havent had a chance to see the reports yet. Our parent teacher interviews were meant to be last week but DD's teacher was away caring for her sick child and is now on bereavement leave :(

But I do hope that DD is doing well at school, she was excelling at the beginning of the year.

Ok, so DD isn't quite ready for school, but I've been there and done that!

I think it's good what they are trying to do, kids don't tend to understand a teachers comments in a report card, or they don't get numbering (as in, 13/31 - 13th out of 31 kids).
At least now as well, kids know their ABCs, they are going to realise they have to pull themselves together.

The only part I'd be worried about is (again) the whole americanised australia... Kids watch the Simpsons for example, and Bart gets all Fs... What if a child gets an F on their report card and thinks 'I'm useless in this area, Im going to give up now'.

But thats a maybe, and only slightly worried of labelling... :o

the reports at my dd's school have 4 columns. exceeding expectations, meeting expectations , moving toward expectations and minimum evidence.

i think this works well as it is a positive wording and may help encourage further effort. rather than focus on what wasn't achieved.

I am with you Mrs Casper!! It's far too hard to decifer the reports these days, at least if they kept the a, b,c's going you would know exactly where your child was at and how you could help him/her!!

My sons report came home with straight A's (not bragging) now he is a gifted child Year 1. He reads at the age of a 9 year old and is reading Level 21 -30.

His little friend is reading level 1-5 she also received an A for that area
Another child reading Level 10 received an A.

When I asked how they mark them the teacher said well they have passed the requirements for the level they are working at even though they are working at three different levels. So basically my DS A's mean nothing.

I would much prefer they be marked according to one scale for year 1 if you know what I mean or marked and reported on Stage 1 outcomes Stage 2 outcomes etc.

My daughters changed their reports throughout the year, so the first one was reported one way, the second the new way. So for her first report she got straight A's. (Not trying to brag just makea point). The next report all A's except PE, which was a C. Why did you drop so much? She didnt know, she tried very hard, but couldnt understand the grade drop.

Spoke to the teacher. Her work level is the same. SHe is still trying very hard. SHe is at the same level as what she was in the first report, but in the first report they take into account effort. Now they are not allowed to (that stinks I think! Maybe not in the grade someone shouldnt get an A if they get 10% in Maths but try extraordinarily hard, but there should be somewhere to comment on/grade effort). So she is apparently where she should be for her year level, and the same as she was when she got an A - even though by looking it appears she has dropped two grades.

Gosh I hope you can follow my dribble.

Her other A's in the second report means she is 1 year or greater above where she should be.
