Hi there,

It's still a long way off but can anyone tell me the procedure of a c-section, from organising a date to arriving at the hospital (I'm going to Sydney Mater)? Someone said something yuk about needing a 'cleaning shower'.

It would really help to know the yuk bits in advance so I can mentally prepare and do I get a choice of being escorted to the toilet?

Hi there,

First of all congratulations! :) I had a c-section at the Mater Nth Syd about a month ago and can honestly say I had the best experience. The staff are fantastic.

As for the procedure, some things may/may not change depending on your OB, pregnancy etc etc. I had my csection 9 days out from the EDD (I think they like to have them done at least a wk before) but you will need to discuss a date with your OB.

At my last OB's appointment he told me what to expect on the day, what time to arrive etc. The day before the c-section I got a call from the Mater and a midwife talked me through the same things.

Not really sure what is meant by the 'yuk cleaning shower' - I did have to wash my 'bits' before surgery with antibacterial wash but I did this by myself in the bathroom.

You will also need to be trimmed where the incision will be made. I chose to shave at home, but the midwives can trim with an electric razor on the day if needs be.

The only time I got escorted to the bathroom was the very next morning when I got up for the first time. However, once the nurse walked me to the shower (basically I hobbled and she just hovered in case I needed help), I was happy to be left alone! She checked on me from the door every so often to make sure I was ok but that was it.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any other info.
