I stopped at 12 motnhs with DD1, and stopped at about 5 1/2 with DD2. I just wash in hot saopy water, and rinse in hot water. She gets enough **** off the ground and other things, what's the point in sterilising! LOL

I stopped at 6mths. Once they were crawling and getting dirty hands from the floor, sucking on the dogs chain out the backyard and eating dead bugs off the floor, I figured I was wating my time.

I stopped with both boys around 7 months. Once they were crawling around and putting things in their mouths we didn't really see the point.

I stopped at 7 months for the same reasons as the people above :D

Hmmm seeing when everyone stopped has made me think  I just thought you HAD to keep sterilsing until bubs was off the bottle! Maybe i was wrong!

Nah, you only steralise to stop them getting "germs" but once they start rolling and crawling, they are getting far worse germs from what they touch and suck on.

I stopped sterilising at 6 months, as Shazbutt said they get enough **** of the ground, so whats the point

I know I haven't had my baby yet but I see my friends and my s/o tells me what I need to know.

As from what I have seen from my friends she has never sterilized her son's bottle and personally I don't agree, he is almost 2 now and he has been sick more time then what I have been in my entire life due to not sterilizing the bottle :barf:

As far as I am concerned ehrn I have my little one I will be sterilizing the bottle for as long as he/she is having the bottle, you better be safe then sorry!

While having a baby/new-born around there shouldn't be anything on the ground like dust and things they can get into there mouth.

My first born is 8.5yrs old now and I stopped sterilising his at 6mths. He has had 1-2 colds, gatroenteritis once, chickenpox and nothing else. It all comes down to how good their immune system is. In saying that though, I have nothing against people who choose to sterilise things for longer, it is a personal choice.

.
It may not be caused from not sterilising. Some kids are just sickly kids. Though I do think that before 6 months its essential to sterlise.

Each to their own.

I stopped at 7 months aswel.

I wash the bottle with hot soapy water after each use and sterilse maybe once a month just to give them a really good clean.

Like Poshbecks said some babies are just sickly babies. My DD has only have the sniffles once since she was born so i dont think sterilising has much to do with it.

DS turns 1 in 2 days and I will continue to sterilise until he is completely weaned. :)

Yeah, good luck with that! you'd be amazed at what they pick up - that you wouldn't even see!

I think the only way to avoid that would be to vacuum 2-3 times a day and to mop every day.

DD is breast fed but has a bottle occassionally. I still sterilise the bottles but don't sterilise the sippy cup...hmmm! That doesn't even make sense to me! I think the only difference between bottles and normal dirt/germs etc. is the contents of what goes in the bottle. Just make sure they are washed really well and I rinse anything of DD's off to remove any soap residue.

Luckytiger I vacuum my carpet every day, spot clean it once a week and there's nothing that DD can get in her mouth (fluff etc.) but carpet just isn't clean. When DD was a non mobile baby she'd be on her playmat/a blanket etc. but she's moving and wriggling everywhere now, it's impossible. A little bit of exposure to dirt and germs is good for their immune system!

Had to laugh, babies can find the most minsicule (sp?) piece of dirt or rubbish from the ground, even if you walked behind them with a vacumm cleaner all day you'd still miss stuff!!
Mine has a nack for finding other childrens discarded sandwiches off the floor at playgroup and munching on them, yuck!! I take them off him and he is gutted, apparently they taste better after they have been trampled in dirt!!

I stopped at around 6-7months too. My boy is 15months and never had more than a runny nose one or twice in his life. I now sterilise his bottles once a week for good measure and wash in hot soapy water in between then.

My friend has a boy the same age and he has had heart surgery, adnoids out and a tonsillectomy, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma and Excema all in his first year of life, some kids are just unlucky.
It's a bit unfair to blame the parent for the child being sickly, unless of course there is real reason to be concerned that the child is being neglected or not properly cared for.
I do have friends however who do still sterilise so it's up to you whether you think it's neccessary or not.
Hopefully my little man will be off bottles soon, so I wont have to worry about it!!

I always have to laugh when people that don't even have kids yet are criticising others for their decisions...and making plans of what they WILL be doing when they do have kids. I made plans too...but it all goes out the window when they're finally there (babies aren't necessarily co-operative when it comes to planning...).

I stopped steralizing when my younger brother melted my steralizer (it was sitting on the stove top...and he decided to use the stove but didn't bother to move the steralizer...I had to pry the steralizer and the fry pan apart... ). I think that was around 6 months...

By that stage, DD was picking up all sorts of junk...a lot of it being carpet fluff or tiny crumbs (that you couldn't even see until she had it in her fingers). I also caught her licking the floor a few times...so I didn't think unsteralized bottles would do any damage.

DD is 1 in a week, and she has only ever had ONE cold (and it was just a runny nose...). If anything, I think she's better for it.

My sister was always telling me how to raise my kids.....now that she has one of her own, she is always asking me how to raise her.

Mine used to lick glass doors and screen doors, LOL. Have you ever seen how much dust gets caught in the gauze on screen doors?? :barf:

I still sterilize my dds 1 bottle that she has a day. Only takes a minute to shove it in the microwave.
I know I prob don't need to but I just like too.

While she still has a bottle I will still do it. Makes somewhere to store the bottles too in the sterilizer.

we stopped sterlising recently. she's 21 months. We now wash it with hot soapy water and then dump it in the fridge an dfill it up when we want to use them

i still sterilise jacobs bottles and will do until he doesnt have them... its just as easy to clean them and then stack them in the steriliser and when its full chuck it on for a few minutes... and good for peace of mind to... i understand what everyone is saying about them picking up things from the ground etc etc... but they can quite easy still get sick from bacteria growing on/in a bottle whether they eat dirt off the ground or not... i would rather be safe than sorry and wouldnt forgive myself if it was through my actions (not sterilising) that made my little boy sick... iykwim...

I stopped at 12 months for the same reasons. I was told by my cyh nurse that it's not really necessary once they become mobile.

Ok well I'm probably going to be shot and killed on here but here it goes.....

Poppy is 5 1/2 months and I have stopped steralising ( few I am still alive!! :) ).

She will be going to a childcare centre in 6 weeks and she is already rolling absolutely everywhere picking up stuff from the ground and putting it straight in her mouth - and I don't just mean dirt or dust!! but even toys and teething rings and blankets and my hands! These things have not been stralised!!!

For the person who made the comment about being a clean freak... You are going to be seriously tired and stressed everyday once your bub comes and running around vacuming and washing floors twice a day  coming from a clean freak (myself ) - forget it mate!!! you can't have things perfect. Besides I think it helps build up their immunity, they need to be exposed to these things if they aren't then when they eventually are it could make them alot more sick.

I stopped steralising at 6 months as I was told by the health dep (in wa) that it does nothing. Washing with soapy hot water kills germs so I just did that. Either taht or the health dep is really crappy here.

I was just going to start a thread asking about how long to sterilize because I find it ends up being a lot of work. My dd #2 is now six months, not mobile yet but I can't see myself doing it for much longer.
I've been using the miltons tablets but I think once this box runs out, I'll just use hot soapy water and rinse well.
