View Full Version : Do you let your child...
stand inside the shopping trolley?

 they love being buried under groceries
I got the biggest death stare from a mother today because my DD was standing in the trolley with the shopping bags
She was sitting in the trolley but then started screaming so I let her stand inside the trolley instead.

nope, not a chance in heck.
she 'does' stand but it is quickly followed with a 'sit down or your out of there'...works a charm
I let a relatives child long, long ago before i had kids and before the sides were so high and she fell out straight onto her head.
So, no, i dont let my kids as toddlers but i do let them at about 4- 5 when theyre tired and need a rest and too big for the baby seat.

When Keiara was around 2 I let her stand.
We were in K-mart the trolley got something stuck under the wheel and because it jolted Keiara fell out and landed on her face.
It was the worst feeling ever watching for baby fall to the ground and not being able to catch them, followed by the thump then screamz, It was terrible I thought she broke her nose coz it was all red and swollen.
Everyone came running we went to the Hospital and thank god she was fine.
So no I will never let a child stand again it is a safety issue.
I let him stand in there at Big W once because we were only going to be 5 minutes and DH was holding his hand but otherwise I don't think so. I'm a major worry wort though. I don't do anywhere near half the things most people do because I imagine something going wrong :o I'm a total kill joy, poor boy!
Nope. My almost 4 year old stands on the outside, at the end, 2 year old in seat, baby goes in a moby wrap on me. No need for them to be in the trolley, I need the space for food anyway.

No, not unless we're at the checkout and not moving. She is allowed to sit in the trolley when she gets sick of the baby seat, and she can stand up if we're at a counter and, again, not moving. But otherwise she's in the baby seat or she's sitting down.

I've never thought about letting her do it with the food shopping. She'd get squished! :D
 well she didn't get squished as I only had a couple of bags but she almost squished the eggs and bread
I think it might be time for me to buy one of those harnesses.

A little while ago I had my 4 year old sitting in the trolley where the groceries go and the 2 year old sitting in the seat - the reason I did this is cause 4 year old goes hypo in shops and its easier to keep him restrained in there - anyhoo I had an old bloke come up to me and full on yell at me for doing so! Everyone turned to stare it was so humiliating!
But yes I do let him in there if he sits on his bot bot :)

AS you said we STRAP out kids into the seat when we are driving 100km per hour down the freeway. Yes it is still dangerous if something were to happen, but they would be strapped in.
The OP asked if you let your child STAND in the trolley, not sit in the seat with the strap.

LOL.... I'm really uptight and strict, and no way was DD even allowed IN the trolley to begin with, nor was she allowed to ride on the outside of it while I pushed.
Aside from the safety issue, I've seen allsorts spilled in those trollies (laundry powder, detergents etc) and IMO they're not a place I want my kid to be sitting.
If you're at the supermarket with your kid in the trolley, then you'll probably get a "look" from me too, cause it's my pet hate and my automatic reaction to it sometimes appears on my face before I've had time to censor it to protect your feelings.

Nonny you crack me up. I've felt the same look on my face before, too, and then always berate myself for being a judgemental cow
Whenever DD goes in the main part of the trolley (which isn't often) I put her blanket down to sit on. I think it's nicer for her little bum that way anyway!

DS1 sits in the toddler seat, or walks holding on to the side of the trolley, DS2 in a wrap, or baby seat.

I've seen a trolley fall sideways with a toddler in it... poor little tot landed under it, smacked his head on the concrete floor.... not pretty.

I prefer her to walk (because she's lazy and often refuses to walk - and I'm not about to encourage her laziness), but there are times when she sits in there. Not in the seat part - she's too big and heavy for that, but in the cart itself.
I get her to sit at first, but later make her stand near the handle end... and face me and hold onto the handles.
DD stands STILL in it - if she wanted to muck around and be an idiot, then she would be told to get out.
DS has sat in the trolley maybe once or twice ever, but I won't allow him to stand in it.

I do the grocery shopping ALONE!!!
but maybe to get fill ins or run into BigW the trolley doubles as a stroller for me.
I usually have one in the seat and one or two sitting (usually on a pack of toilet paper or my green bags because the trolley 'hurts their bum')
when I do I push the trolley kinda from the side IYKWIM so I have better control of it, and can quickly grab a stander upperer.
My kids get distracted easily or dawdle -- resulting in a loooong 'quick trip' or a kid getting squished by someone elses trolley while i'm trying to wrangle another.
But standing - nope no way.

For anyone interested, there was a study (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/120771868/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0) done in NZ in relation to trolley injuries. Admittedly this was before voluntary standards were introduced, but considering how many parents still flout the safety precautions I suspect the results are still quite relevant.
Results: For the 10 year period investigated, 282 hospitalizations and no fatalities were identified. A significant increasing trend for hospitalizations was detected (χ2 = 17.6, 1 d.f.; P < 0.001). Ninety-two per cent of children hospitalized were aged under 5 years and two-thirds were aged 2 years or younger. Ninety per cent of injuries resulted from falls from trolleys, 84% of injuries were to the head or face and 22% were rated serious (AIS-3) on the Abbreviated Injury Scale.

i used to when DD was smaller (very occasionally) but mostly in the seat with the trolley seat cover to make is comfy!! i stopped letting DD in the large part of the trolley when she was being silly one day and *almost* fell out onto her face  gave me a heart attack and i was lucky to have caught her by the legs!!!
Yeh every now and then. but only if im grabbing a few things, and i hold him all the time, he likes it.

i do this, normally i can grab a carton of soft drink or a box of nappies, they seem to work well
when DD1 had her cast on (just the 1 that she could walk in, we didn't go out when she had the 2 on or the full leg one) at the start of the year i would take a towel along because the trolly hurt her bum too.
DD1 is getting pretty good these days but still if we are out for a while her legs will hurt so the trolly is the only place to put her (she is to heavy for the seat, plus DD2 is in it anyway).

DD has an unfortunate habit of going `cuddle, cuddle, cuddle!' when she's had enough of the seat at the front, grabbing my top and pulling it down for all the world to see my boobs. She has a vice-like grip, too, so the only way I can regain my dignity is to get her out.
:D
dammit .. I too answered yes .. but it should have been no .. because I make the boys SIT ... standing is too unsafe (its too easy to lean for an item .. or lose your balance .. ) I remember my brother tipping a trolley over when he was little (it was very sloped ground too .. which didn't help).. he was pretty lucky, but I remember how frightened my parents were.
My boys are at odd ages .. Jack being four - he wants to walk .. but tends to whinge about how MUCH walking we do at the shops .. (male??) and Alex (2) is WAY too big for the baby seat .. he HATES it .. his legs get stuck when he hops in/ out ... its not fun .. but he finds temptations TOO tempting when we shop so if he is walking .. its horrendous to shop ...
I cant take the stroller shopping - there is no real area for groceries if I have the stroller .. so it has to be the trolley
(my favourite thing to do .. is purchase BIG cartons of coke zero first .. put them in the trolley .. and the boys use that as a seat.. :D )

i answered yes, but I mostly get him to walk. he is only 2, but Im not a fan of keeping kids in prams etc when they can walk. he has been walking since 10 months and I cant really keep him still anyway. if he starts to look tired or laggs behind I put him in the trolley. not everyone does it like this, but I prefer to. I always pick him up to cross roads or to go to the car, if he's not restrained in the trolley. I know it's probably not very safe putting children in trolleys standing up, but safer than a 2 year old clambering up your body and pulling himself out of the seat anyway! hes the kind of kid who undoes the straps all the time and it drives me mad. its probably a LOT safer him standing at the big heavy part of the trolley than standing in that flimsy little seat too!
No. I did it briefly the other week for the first time with my son and he almost fell out head first and I caught him :(

My point was....travelling in a car is far more dangerous but we do that all the time....sure I try and minimise risk where I can but I don't wrap him in cotton wool. I think it depends on the age of the child, mine is not able to climb out nor tall enough to fall out but steady enough to stand and hold on with both hands. If he doesn't hold on he gets taken out. If any of these were to change, I would stop the practice. I also let him go down slppery slides too and guess what sometimes he goes to fast and falls on his bottom oops!

We must have big trolley seats where we are because my 6 year old can still fit in one when needed, although, as mentioned, it's only if she's particularly tired (ie: I've remembered we need milk, bread and fruit at 7:30 at night and her bed time is 7pm lol) or if she's unwell or otherwise out of sorts.
Other times she walks and helps with the groceries, she has her own list and collects the things on her list, but that only started to happen when she was about 4, I'd cut out labels and stick them onto cardboard so she could see what we were getting, rather than reading what we needed.
Between 2.5 and 4 it was a little more difficult taking her shopping, she'd be ok for the first half of the trip but then get bored so I'd put her in the seat part after that then give her my purse to hold so she felt really important doing a job for Mummy and it was a very important job indeed because if she dropped it we couldn't get anything

I'm in country Vic and can not for the LIFE of me fit Roar in the front (she is 2 in 2 weeks) She's tall and has a bubble butt.. If I could angle her right to slide in, she would fit fine.. but I have wrestled (with 3 people helping at one point!) to slide her in and it jams at her knee's in the leg holes with her bum still over the back, not in the seat at all :(.. and after 45 mins of trying.. we simply gave up.
I want the trolley that fits a 6 yr old!!!!!!!!!

Although she's a lightweight (19kg) she's actually quite tall, almost the tallest in her class and taller than many of the year 1 children, and she still fits in the Coles shopping trolley seats. I'm in North Qld.

No way and I shudder when I see other kids standing in trolleys. My SIL stood up in a trolley when she was younger and overbalanced it, falling flat on her back with the trolley on top of her and she smacked her head so hard on the floor of the supermarket that she almost detached both of her retinas. She's lucky to be able to see at all and has had countless operations to repair the damage that was done.
Might be a freak accident but it's not a risk I'm willing to take with my kids.

No not standing but i do allow my 4 year old to sit in the trolley part - we actually do it quite often! Not for grocerie shopping because i need the trolley for the groceries, but if we are just looking around the shop I put DD in the front seat and him in the basket, i dont let him stand though, he knows to sit and ive never had any dramas.
Theres a weight limit on the front seat anyway isnt there? ours must be small too because i couldnt imagine putting my 4 year old in the seat!
MummaBear03
13-11-2009, 11:00
The weight limit is 18kg but it's safe to use up to 25kg provided the child is not a heavy set child, as legs could become stuck and I've seen people squish their chubby little kiddies into these and the poor little things scream and scream as they are being pulled out. My child also have very skinny little legs so that's another reason she fits into them still.

i havent tried DD1 in a seat for a while...i wonder if she will fit :detective:
but then again if i put here there i have to work out what to do with DD2.
oh totally OT
our coles just got some of the COOLEST trollys that i could have so used back when DD2 was a bub. they are like the twin ones but have the capsule AND the seat side by side. i have seen the twin ones with the capsule things and once i have seen a twin one with two seats but never a mixture . now i just have to have another bub in time to get to use one :p
oh and i think for kids that chuck tanties in the seat of the trolly it would be SO handy to have it so they could face either direction, DD2 i am lucky becuase she is easily distracted but sometimes the kids just want to see where they are going (not ALL but i reckon a large amount of the tanties could be solved by this)

No. They sit in the sit. If theres enough room they can sit in the trolley part (where the shopping goes) once Hayley stood up near the edge and I went over a hole outside and she almost fell out head first. She was only 2 years old then.
No,never. Not since the day my then 18 month old leaned out, overbalanced the trolley and ended up on the supermarket floor under the trolley, covered in groceries. How she wasn't badly hurt remains a mystery to me.
For me, it's just too big a risk.
Nope. My almost 4 year old stands on the outside, at the end, 2 year old in seat, baby goes in a moby wrap on me. No need for them to be in the trolley, I need the space for food anyway.
I looked after a little boy who fell off the front of a shopping trolley and was badly injured. He hit his head on the ground and was hit by the trolley. Apparently it is not uncommon.

My risk assessment still tells me having my 4 year old stand on the end of the trolley, holding on tightly with both hands is safer than having her standing up inside the trolley. At least if she fell off the end of it she has more chance of landing on her feet or bottom then toppling out head first from inside the trolley.
Yep. I don't like him being in the trolley but I don't have a choice sometimes. If he walked he would be everywhere pulling stuff off shelves. If he doesn't want to go into the seat then I am not physically strong enough to put him in there myself (he's 20 kg). So, the best alternative is to pop him into the trolley section.
First i wanna say that i remember how much fun it was to do this but secondly i work in a department store with shopping trollys had have seen wayyyyy too many trollies tipping over from kids on the the outside hagging on and kids falling out of the trolly .please i get that kiddies get tryed but please be carefull :o

Back to the original topic.
Yes, but only if I can hold my DS's hand. At 36 weeks pregnant, I can't carry him constantly, and he hates the seat with a passion if he has to be in it for more than 10 minutes. Especially if we're doing something like waiting in the layby line

I disagree, i used to let my DS hop on the end or on the side of the trolley because i thought it was safer until he lost his grip and fell off and i ran up his foot, it left it very bruised and skin came off. Was not a good and safe idea at all.
I keep my other DS who is 2.5yrs in the trolley now. he hasn't fallen over, usually i make him sit in there anyway.
But its either put him in a trolley, or out him on a leash which i highly disagree with. So i choose trolley to be the safest option.

Our local supermarket just got a heap of brand new trolleys in with a baby seat and toddler seat next to each other on the handles, so I won't have to let dd sit or stand in the trolley now. Previously I was thinking I would have to, but now I won't so I am happy.
I think the OP has plenty of answers now.
