View Full Version : Losing that baby weight
OK so it's a little over three months since I had DD#2 and I've still got about 8-10kg that I'd like to shed to get back into my pre-baby shape or a little bit less.
I'm interested in how other mums lost their baby weight ... I guess I'm in need of some sort of motivation to kick-start my own weight loss program!
I'm currently a member of a gym (however my membership is on suspension due to pregnancy) and I'm due to return in early December. But I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get down there as often as I should, plus the the monthly membership fees and childminding costs for two children is a little pricey while still on maternity leave.
So I'm interested to know how other mums exercise besides the gym, how much weight they lost and how long it took.
:) :)
My DD is 8 months old and I've still got about 5kgs to lose until I'm at my pre-baby weight. I've been very slack and have only recently started to get my butt into gear to try and get rid of the excess weight. DH and I take DD out in the pram every afternoon for a walk, we try and walk for at least an hour but that's getting hard now as it's getting so hot. I also do boot camp once a
week at the gym.
ETA- Sorry I didn't answer your question-I've been walking and doing bootcamp for about 3 months and have lost about 5kgs so far.
Good Luck :)

My Wii Fit!!! Love it. I do a minimum of an hour on it every day. It keeps me going as I try and beat my high scores etc. Plus I weigh myself on it every day so if I have put on weight I do longer on it and try and get back to the previous days weight which really spurs me on with my weight loss.
I also did Lite N Easy for 8 weeks which while I still credit the weight loss mainly to the Wii, the food taught me what to eat and what not to eat.

I walk twice a day with the pram - half an hour in the am and an hour in the pm. Also lots and lots of baby rocking
I think I lost my weight due to a healthy diet & b/f though, I think 'they' (whoever they are) say weight loss is 80% diet related :detective:

I remember saying to my friend after DD was born `I'm breastfeeding but it isn't coming off!' and she said to me `well, you know, it does help if you aren't also eating ice cream, chocolate and just about everything else you lay eyes on!'
Diet and exercise, everything in moderation. Be kind to yourself - your bub is only three months old. In the beginning you need a little bit of the extra weight to help produce your milk. As time goes by it will come off.
WeightWatchers is AWESOME, too.

I recommend weight watchers, especially weight watchers online. I have lost pretty much all my pregnancy weight apart from 1.5 kilos :)

the wii is the only thing thats been helping me too. i had to cancel my gym membership (wasnt happy with creche and couldnt justify the fees with the number of times i was getting there each week),
and i've been going for walks in the park. it tires out DH too!

Although I'm not overweight, I had a few kilos I wanted to lose after DD was born so I grabbed myself a WW points book, worked out what I was allowed in a day (24 for a breastfeeding mum of my dimensions) and made sure I didn't go past that. I wasn't too strict about it, but it was a good way to learn about which foods were going to stack on the kilos, and there were quite a few surprises. Since I want to lose a few more after having DS, I've done the same again.
My nice healthy spinach quiche, made with oil instead of butter, no meat, lowfat soy milk, only 1 egg and barely a pinch of horribly low fat cheese..... 60 POINTS!!!! Considering I would eat half of one for dinner with salad, that was a 30 point meal, over and above my brekkie and lunch.
Now I know to avoid the pastry, and limit my snacks, and watch my portion sizes. I've been doing this for about 2 weeks and have gone down by 2kg, without doing any more exercise than usual. I do try to be "upright" for as much of the day as possible though, so I move a lot, even if it's not strictly exercise.

WW is great for that huh? You find out that things that you think are of no consequence are just PACKED full of no-nos. I got so good at cooking WW meals and staying within my points range, and the meals were just delicious. Seriously. I remember one night I made us the yummiest home-made hamburgers with chips and salad, and had icecream afterwards, and it all fit in my points range. So awesome. I'm definitely doing it again as soon as I'm established breastfeeding.

DOn't forget to allow yourself an extra 10 points per day for breastfeeding!

Is it 10 points a day? Really? I was only going to add an extra 4.

10 points extra if you're fully breastfeeding, 5 points extra if bubs has solids or formula as well.
ETA - that's from info I found online.... I'm assuming it's correct, but maybe a WW member can verify that?

So in that case, if I cheat a bit and only add an extra 7 points, I'll lose weight faster? That's the way they do it with exercise. You can either add on the points you earn through exercise, or keep to your regular points limit and lose weight a bit faster. Hmmmmm shall have to call them and see.

I'd stick to the full 10, cause even if you exercise it off again you'd need to have put the nutrients there in the first place to be able to use them for milk production IYKWIM?
I am doing WW online and I get an extra 7 points for breast feeding. However they say that you must eat all of those otherwise you might have a problem with milk supply. You can save up to 4 points a day for weekends and meals out etc

I still feel I need to lose a few KGs to get rid of the bulge in my tummy. I am going to stop drinking juice/cordial/sugary drinks and save myself around 300 calories per day without having to eat less. It takes 20 minutes on an exercise bike to burn one can of softdrink or a similar sized glass of juice. Easier not to have the drink in the first place!
I also have decided NO fried takeaways so goodbye to fish and chips and the occasional foodcourt fast food meal. Another easy way to eat empty calories is icecream so goodbye to that. I don't regularly eat biscuits or cakes but if I did I'd be getting rid of those too. Oh and a big one for me- no cookies with my subway (2x cookies is more calories than 2 chocolate bars or half a family block!)!!!
With some easy exercise and daily walking I hope to shed the tummy.
