View Full Version : Nappy Rash due to Teething????????
Hi
My poor baby is having really big problems with teething. She spent all day crying because her top gum (where 4 teeth are coming through at once ) was swollen and hurting her. As soon as I put her down she would scream her head off and as soon as I picked up she calmed down but continued to rub her gums. Mum came over to take over so I could go to work this afternoon and as soon as she saw mum she was all smiles and laughing and waving .
When I got home and my hubbie started chaning her nappy we noticed her bottom was really red and had small blister like boils . The community nurse said it's due to her teething due to the acid they produce when they get teeth. We had the same problems when her two bottom teeth on either side of her two front bottom teeth (no problems there ). S(he cried non stop for 4 1/2 hours one night and we rushed her to Emergency to be told she was teething and to give her panadol and rub her gums with teething gel.) We put nappy cream on her bottom and it cleared up and now its back twice as bad I guess due to the fact she has four coming through.
Could someone give me some suggestions on what to do as I'm at a loss. I hate to see her in pain and I can't let her have nappy free time as she always pees on me.
Having a tough time and need some advise to try to keep her occupied. My hubbie's work mate told us to try freezing a metal spoon (something that has no sharp edges) and giving it to her to chew it helps until the spoon cools down and then she starts crying all over again.
I can't go through another day like this as I have to go to work and as soon as I leaves she calms down and goes to sleep.
Very frustrated Mummy

Hi its horrible isn't it? As far as the teeth go i've also found that a wet washer thats been put in the fridge is good to chew on. Instead of using bonjela (which I don't think works) I use sm - 33, bought from the chemist and I have found this actually numbs my boys gums.
Don't be afraid to give her some panadol if she is really distressed.
My son gets the runs whenever his teeth are coming and gets the blistery bum as well and I have found that alot of cream - every nappy change works (i use amolin) but she really will feel alot more comfortable if you could give her a bit of nappy free time - maybe put a towel under her when you are holding her. This will give the rash a chance to dry out and clear up. Might be messy but in the long run both you and she will feel alot better.
I don't know how old she is but with my son I used to give him a water ice block to chew on. I did this from about 5 months (i think).
Hi allycat2
Sounds like you are not haveing a good time. It's so hard when your little one is in pain and there is not much you can do about it.
For the nappy rash go to the chemist and talk to the pharmasist there is madicated creams you can get only from the chemist which will clear up the nuppy rash in no time.
For the teething have you tried Nurafen? I found it works much better then panadol for my son. here are some other suggestions which you may like to try to help ease the pain.
chew on a rusk
teathing ring you put in the fridge ( have 3 so there is always a cold one)
chewing on a cold face washer
Hard plastic teathing ring
make small ice blockes that you can hold and rub against their gums
Hope someone will give you a suggestion that will work for your bub.
Good luck
Hi there,
I have found that my son Jack loves teething rusks when he has teeth coming through. He absolutely devours them and it seems to relieve his gums while he is doing it. He also loved me feeding him little slivers of ice.
Also I have found that Infant Nurofen is excellent for relieving his pain, especially at nightime. When he cut his last tooth two weeks ago he went to bed for the night only to wake up repeatedly over the next couple of hours crying and obviously in pain. I gave him a dose of Nurofen and lots of cuddles and he settled down and slept for 6 hours.
Hope things improve for you both soon.
Whoops, forgot to say that I found Lucas's Paw Paw Ointment fantastic for clearing up his teething induced nappy rash.

Just my opinion but - i would be careful giving your child nurofen. Yes it works very well for some children but can also cause alot of problems. A friends baby just recently had a severe asthma attack after a dose of nurofen and the doctors said that this is very common as there is something in the nurofen that will cause asthma attacks in alot of children with a family history of asthma.
HI Allycat2
Its such a hard time and my DS suffered terribly with nappy rash when teething.
In regards to helping with the teeth i have found bonjela and Nurofen works best together (Nurofen is basically the same as panadol except it has an anti-inflamitory which is why its better for teeth) you need to give nurofen after a feed though....
For the bum i found nappy free time after a soak in warm water with "pinetarsol" in it (from chemist) then a good barrier cream (i use Amolin or curash cream) more frequent nappy changes also required with new barrier cream each time... Make sure you are not using wipes with anything in them... use a face washer or cotton balls with water only, or i rinse out the wipes in water first before using them, get all the soapy stuff out or else it will sting..
At one stage my DS nappy rash had become fungal and we used daktarin once a day and this cleared it up really quickly....
talk to your pharmasist as they can give you lots of advise on what products to use including info on Nurofen etc...... or your Gp if your really worried.
Good luck
Thanks for all the advise :) . I will take it all into consideration. I'm just a bit confused though her nappy rash always seems to always disappear in the morning but creeps back up in the evening. Could anyone possibly tell me why this is the case
Maybe it comes back in the evening a bit more because she has drank a bit more during the day or could be due to what she has eaten. I don't know - it's just a thought.
I recall going to my girlfriends house and her girl was 1 and a half and she was changing her bum and it was that red and blistered that she was bleeding. I stood there and cried. I do apologise because I can't recall the cream she used but the pharmacy would be able to assist. You just feel so bad don't you - to see your precious one in pain and the last thing you need it comments from loved ones.
At the Womens and Childrens Hospital pharmacy in Adelaide I used to buy cod liver oil and benzoin cream from there and was amazing stuff.
I will try and find out what the cream is for you.
For a natural solution that may help her red bottom is to use chamomile wipes.
Make a cup of chamomile tea and add some cold pressed oil (such as olive or sweet almond etc) and if her skin isn't broken one drop of lavander essential oil. Dip a thin face washer or chux or kitchen towelling into the solution and wipe. This is soothing and healing for the skin. A dusting of cornflour may also help.
If it is really bad, a lot of people recommend using a chamomile compress (just the chamomile tea) on a face washer (or those make up remover pads if you're using disposables) and place in the nappy.

You might want to try an amber teething necklace. We had real probs with the first 3 boys and so we tried something different on the 4th and bought a necklace from www.amberbebe.com (http://www.amberbebe.com). Wow what a difference - it really cut down on the toxicity - no rancid nappies or flushed checks and certainly no nappy rash - hope it work for you.
