Well its a year late but I thought I might share my birth story.
I was due on October 30th 2008. Started getting really strong pains on saturday night the 1st of November, they lasted for pretty much the whole weekend but they were completely irregular. They got really intense Monday morning the 3rd of November 2008 but were still irregular. I rang the hospital and they said I could come in and get checked out but if I wasn't in full labour I would just be sent home again. I had an appointment booked for 6pm that night so decided to try and wait till then.
By 5pm the pain was unbearable but still not really regular, they ranged from 3-7 minutes apart, so packed the kids bags and Sean decided to drop me off at the hospital then drop the kids at his mums.
I got to the hospital at 6 and sat down and waited for my appointment but the pains were getting worse and worse so I went up to the desk and calmly told the midwife that I couldn't wait any longer. She just looked at me and I burst into tears so she put me straight in a room.
Sean rang me and asked what was going on and if he should come to the hospital. I told him I didn't know yet but to make his way here but take his time. The midwife checked me out and said this baby's gonna be here in the next hour. I was 6cms dilated.
Had a quick shower then they made me get out to have a dose of antibiotics coz I was group B strep positive, then I felt like I needed the toilet. I heard Sean arrive while I was in there. While sitting on the toilet my waters broke and I felt like I needed to push. Yelled out for the midwife she came in and said ok well lets have a baby then.
Started pushing (while still on the toilet!) I had two pushes and she was nearly out so stood up pushed once more and Emily Jade arrived at 7:04 pm! 7 pounds 10 ounces and 52cms long.
Then I had to move to the bed to push the placenta out. Pushed for ages and it wouldn't come out so the midwife pulled it out. Then she realized that it had broken in half when she pulled it and the rest was still in there. They tried to get the rest out but ended up having to go into theatre. I had a spinal and they got the rest out vaginally.
Then whilst in recovery I started having massive blood loss so had to go in to theatre again coz they thought there must still be more in there. Got put to sleep this time. When I woke up they explained that they think they got it all this time and they had inserted this thing that was sorta like a water balloon filled with saline to keep pressure on my uterus and hopefully stop the bleeding.
I wasn't allowed out of bed so DH had to do pretty much everything for Emily and I.
Tuesday night they slowly deflated and removed the balloon. Within two hours I was Shaking non stop and bleeding heavily again. I was completely out of it, I remember hearing everyone talking but I couldn't see or speak.
They tried to remove what was left of the placenta manually again I had the gas while they were trying to do it but I ended up having an asthma attack.
They ended up calling in the head obstetrician (Sp?) in to operate and I got put to sleep again but this time before I went in I had to sign to give them permission to give me a hysterectomy if they couldn't stop the blood loss. I woke up in intensive care. They said they hope they got it all this time and they reinserted the balloon.
The reason they had so much trouble is because I had Placenta Accreta which means the placenta had actually started growing into the wall of my uterus instead of just sticking to the lining.
Got out of ICU and put back in the maternity ward on Wednesday. They decided they would try and deflate the balloon again 9am Thursday morning but if I bled again they would probably have to give me a hysterectomy as I had already lost 6 litres and they wouldn't let me lose anymore.
I was pretty scared, Sean and I had already decided Emily was the last but I didn't want a hysterectomy. I woke at 4 am Thursday morning coughing. When I coughed it felt like something was coming out down there. the nurse had a look and said well yeah you just delivered the balloon! Doctors rushed around getting everything ready for the hysterectomy in case I bled again but I had NO MORE BLEEDING!!!
So after 6 blood transfusions a whole heap of blood test, antibiotics and god knows what else I finally got discharged 6 days later. The doctor said that because of all they had to do it will be unlikely to fall pregnant again and if I did either I would miscarry or have the same problem again maybe even worse so I had a tubal ligation a few months after the birth.
The hospital said I was only in active labour for 2 hours and I'm proud of myself for doing it drug free even though I had lots of drugs after the birth! http://s1.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif I am just glad Emily was completely healthy.
