Lachlan - Your Birth story :goodvibes:

Week 40 – Wednesday 16/09/09
9am Midwife Appointment
I head to the RBWH to have my 40 week appointment with Kelly my Midwife. I also need to have yet another blood test for platelet levels.
Your heartbeat: 140 bpm
My blood pressure: 72/120
Fundal Height: 40cm
1/5 Engaged
Booked an appointment for 1 weeks time for a stretch and sweep if you haven’t arrived. Kelly says ‘ I need a quite day – to go home for a sleep and we can have this baby tomorrow’ *if only we knew*.
I then went to Chermside for lunch (eggs Benedict – my last meal before becoming your mum) with my mum and to kill sometime until my review. We buy a baby gate more to keep the dog out. Mum then took me back to the RBWH to see Maternity Review. The doctor called us in my platelets' levels had decreased to 68. There was a discussion between several of the reviewers and it was decided that I couldn’t birth in the Birth Centre and would have to go into the suites instead. I was booked into attend a urgent meeting with the anaesthesiologist the next day and I would have to have a cannula (sp) inserted – in the event of an emergency they would be able to react quickly for a transfusion or a GA if I needed a caesarean.
So we headed home – me disappointed but ok knowing I could still birth with my midwife. We made it home in time to have a coffee with your dad before he left to pick up his new car. We had the coffee and ;
· Mum went home
· Adam went to pick his car up
· I laid down to rest
I had only been laying down for around 1/2hr when I felt a ‘pop’ and I immediately slid off the bed to feel my waters break and go everywhere (luckily not on the bed). At 4.54 I messaged your father – ‘I just popped baby, getting in the shower’. I immediately received a phone call, I told him what happened and he finished up at Mitsubishi and headed home (we’re getting a new car).
I called the midwife Kelly and told her my waters had broken, she advised me to go into the Birth Centre and get checked out – for cannula and platelets, then head home to labour, she’d check on me tomorrow.
At 5:35pm (after just finished the phone call) I had my first contraction which lasted 60 seconds, the next one came only 5 minutes after and I knew we had to get to the hospital and I wouldn’t be heading home.
So I had to finish packing the bags for the hospital and your dad wanted a shower, during his shower I was having contractions and feeling the urge to empty my bladder and vomit during them. I planted myself on the floor with the gym ball and knelling mats – right outside the bathroom.
Your dad then realises I have no fuel in my car and its decided he’ll go fill up and I’ll stay home. I was throwing our gear into the bags between the contractions and put the bags onto the front porch ready for Adam to get back – which felt like forever!
So when he got back we grabbed it all got into the car, I still managed to open the boot and get out my ‘labour’ pack – towel for my seat and ice-cream bucket in case I was sick. I jumped into the car and we left for the hospital, during the contractions I would stamp my feet and count but during the trip I found it hard to count and breathe through – so I screamed at Adam to ‘count’ for me, I also closed my eyes to focus.
We arrived at the hospital 1 hour later (6.35), parked and I told Adam he could come back for the bags as we had to go! So after the next contraction we set off for the Birth Centre, with a few stops along the way.
I had a contraction when we got out of the lift and one at the reception desk, we were told to go in the Birth Centre room # 4 to wait and be assessed. After a few contractions a couple of midwives entered to move us to the Birth Suite, where someone comes in and puts the cannula in my hand. 7:35pm The midwife then asks to do an internal to see how far I’m dilated as Kelly lives 45 minutes away, as I really wanted her to be there, I agreed to be told I was 7cm. I continued to labour standing leaning over the bed and hula hooping and breathing through each contraction, with me telling Adam to ‘count’ every time. By the time Kelly arrived I was making a lot of noise and I was getting tired!. Adam would use a damp cloth to wipe my face, neck and shoulders while making me drink water and juice to keep my energy up. I then used the fit ball to sit on next to the bed and rolled the hula hoop, between contractions I rested by laying my head on the bed. I started to feel huge pressure during this time and kept telling everyone I needed to wee, I also told Adam to stop counting as my contractions were taking longer than 60 seconds and the pain was too much knowing how long I still had left!
I was quickly running out of energy and the mat and bean bag were put onto the floor and I kneeled there over the bean bag and used the side of the bed to hold on to. Adam continued at my side on a stool with encouragement, wet wash cloths and drinks. I soon felt pressure and the urge to push, Kelly encouraged me to breathe through them if I could or to go with it. Kelly was sitting behind me and was using a mirror to watch what was happening. Pushing started around 11:30, I was still knelling over the bean bag, using the bed and Adams knee to hold onto when bearing down.
Kelly and Adam continued to encourage me, Kelly suggesting some positions to help baby come down. My eyes were still closed (as they were throughout) and I slumped on the bean bag to rest between. Toward the end I need to help baby come down so I stood leaning on Adam while pushing. Eventually I couldn’t support myself, by which time Kelly asked me to turn around and lay against the bean bag, the button was pushed and another midwife arrived, and I used them to push my legs against to which baby’s head was born. I was told to breathe and coached through small pushes, once his head was out we waited for the next contractions to birth the shoulders, once he was out he was placed directly on my chest, 1:00am 17/09/09.
The cord was left to finish pumping around 10 minutes and Adam cut the cord. After that I was given the needle to help the placenta come away and minimise blood loss – 2:00am
