Breaking news: Maclaren plans to recall 1 million strollers---all its production between 1999 and 2009---after receiving 12 reports of hinges on the stroller that amputated children's fingertips. The company will send out a cover for the hinges to all owners. The CPSC and Maclaren will issue a press release in the recall this Tuesday; Maclaren began notifying its dealers of the recall in the past couple of days.
Here is the take-home message until the recall is official:
• Stop using all Maclaren strollers---yes, every model made since 1999.
• When the recall goes public on Tuesday, order a hinge cover from Maclaren's web site or phone line. (Note: the web site is not live yet as of this writing).
• Wait until you install the hinge cover before using the stroller again.
We will blogging updates on this recall as it develops this week.

Gawd I know there are worse things but I would be so devastated if that happened to my child - I guess because I'd always feel guilty and there would be such a daily visible reminder - I really feel for those poor parents.
I just called the Maclaren distributor here and they said that it's only the US Maclarens - the Australian Maclarens don't have that fault. I can't get this in writing as their contact form is broken.
I don't know whether to believe this??? Do they just mean "no amputations have happened yet in Australia so there is no recall here", or that the strollers are actually different here???
I'm skeptical...
One million strollers recalled after fingertip amputations</HEADLINE><!-- Class 'push-0' just right-aligns the element so that the main content comes first. -->

US authorities have announced a recall of 1 million baby strollers made by Britain's Maclaren, saying they posed a risk of "fingertip amputation" to young children.
"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed," the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.
The Chinese-manufactured strollers' hinge mechanism "poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller", the commission said.
The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller's hinge mechanism, and 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.
The recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers. They have word "Maclaren" printed on the stroller and included models Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.
The products sold from 1999 until this month for between $US100 and $US360.
They are all made in china - US, Canada and AUS. Canada currently negotiating product recall as there is no difference between them - doesn't this mean we have the same ones too??

Probably we do. I checked the Australian Product Recalls site this morning and there was nothing listed there yet.
I just heard on the radio the recall is NOT for strollers sold in Australia.

So whats going on, is the stroller safe to use? I love my maclaren pram and have never had an issue with it but I do not like whats going on now. If we have the same strollers sold to us why is ours not on the recall
Found it!

But seriously why would you have you child's fingers near the stroller when opening and closing it? The only time these children's fingers were cut off was when the stroller was being folded and unfolded. I have a Maclaren & a Mountain Buggy and the buggy I've damaged my fingers pretty badly closing it. I think it's just gone a bit overboard.

Here's a bit from the news:
Maclaren is recalling at least 1 million umbrella strollers because of a potential hazard to children's fingers. A side hinge mechanism poses the risk of cutting or amputating a child's fingers when the stroller is being opened or closed
I've also heard to watch out for Mountain Buggies as they are so light they can fly with the wind! One kid died in a pond or something because the mother didn't put on the breaks and she blamed kidnappers. Honestly with the whole finger thing just be cautious & think before you do. Children choke from eating food, do we stop feeding them? No....
Sure having a kids fingers near the stroller when opening and closing is not ideal - but AMPUTATION? That's pretty severe - I think if it's causing amputation rather than a bit of a sore finger then that's a real issue - and there have been TWELVE of them so it's obviously not a freak incident.
Apparently maclarens have more exposed hinges than many of the strollers out there, so I guess that's why. But if it's something that's happened, and fixable, then of course it should be remedied. It's not like some cheap stroller - people have paid a lot of money for the reputation and safety and I think it's fair to expect that if the item has caused twelve amputations then people should be a alerted. I feel so sad for those poor kids and their parents. Imagine having that happen to your child because of a moment of carelessness, hurry, or multitasking... pretty harsh to say that's deserved...

They just reported on this on Today. I don't have this type of pram but if I did I would be getting in contact with the company to get one of the covers, even if it doesn't affect my pram. Better to be safe than sorry:yes:

Well I read the website you put up and it does state about Maclaren Australian strollers:
<link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CChicken%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cms ohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" images="" smilies="" redface.gif="" border="0" alt="" title="Embarrassment" smilieid="2" class="inlineimg"></o:smarttagtype> no risk of injury to a child when seated in the stroller or when folding or unfolding the stroller FOLLOWING the instructions
<o></o>
As with ALL strollers for use with children, correct parental supervision when operating the strollers will ensure injuries do not occur.
The incidents that have occurred in the <st1><st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region></st1> have not been as a result of faulty strollers or that do not meet the appropriate product safety standards.
when used correctly, our strollers do not present any risk to the child.
I never said they deserved to have their fingers cut off but seriously anything can happen to a child if you are not supervising them.

At the moment, the recall is not in Australia

Thanks so much for this link Sunali,
I've asked for an elbow joint cover kit (that's what they're calling the safety kit) If you've got one of these prams then go ask for one they're free but doesn't look like Maclaren is going out of their way to advertise this, guess they don't want to have to give out too many free kits.
I called the baby shop where I bought my pram and they knew nothing about it?? Think I'll take this link into them today to help out any other parents that go in and ask for help with this. I know it's unlikely to happen and children should be supervised but lets face it an accident is called an accident because you didn't intend for it to happen and if it can be avoided then it should be right!:babydust2:
Thanks Sunali for the link, just ordered my kit for the exact same stroller shown on the CNP link. I'm a really careful person but i'm not taking any risk when it comes to my DD and plus I paid a decent amount for the stroller so I expect to have any problems rectified by the company.
I have a twin tecno that I am pretty sure was made in the US.. Does it include the twin?
Oya the link askes you to state if your stroller is a single or twin when requesting the joint cover so I'm guessing the twin stroller has the same problem. I'd ask them for the cover just to be safe.

hi all,
was just looking at some product recalls and came across this which is important in this thread.
its from www.recalls.gov.au (http://www.recalls.gov.au)
Action on Maclaren Strollers
http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/thumbnail.phtml/itemId/970315/nodeId/289705ceca4b98d227e5d10aeba3bd5b (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/item.phtml?itemId=970315&nodeId=289705ceca4b98d227e5d10aeba3bd5b) On 10 November 2009 Maclaren distributor CNP Brands announced that it was offering free elbow joint cover kits for a range of Maclaren strollers currently on the Australian market. This follows similar action taken by Maclaren USA. CNP Brands states that their strollers are safe when used in accordance with instructions and warnings. However the covers are being offered to ensure that proper precautions are taken by parents and caregivers to avoid injury when opening or closing the umbrella stroller. Consumers wishing to obtain a free elbow joint cover kit can register a request with CNP brands. Please register your interest at www.maclarenbaby.com (http://www.maclarenbaby.com/) or by calling 1300 667 137 between 9.00am and4.00pm AESDT.

would this include the maclaren major? We have a major, which is designed for disabled kids. its umbrella fold.... :(
Just to let people know - I got my kit! Haven't tried putting it on yet - it's basically a soft cover over the hinge - but I'm glad it's come as DD has taken to holding the hinges while she rides around!
I heard of some cases of amputations (in UK?) that sounded like it WASN'T actually being folded/unfolded at the time - SCARY!
