View Full Version : help - using controlled crying to ditch the dummy
Help - i am getting up numerous times a night to replace a dummy for my 9 month old. Lately i have also had to help daugher to sleep by rocking on a few occcasions, i don't want to form a habit. I am 16 weeks preganant with no. 2 and between getting up to pee and replace the dummy i am worn out and on the edge. I need this gorgeous girl to settle herself and sleep through, I am confident once she knows how she will. Planning to do the controlled crying thing, would love to know how long i can expect to be going in and out for? and how many days i should prepare myself for? Any advice or tips and tricks would be appreciated.
Tired :) /:crying: (It depends on the day)

I don't know very much about controlled crying but the person who `invented' it, so to speak, is Dr Christopher Green. He talks about it in his book `Toddler Taming', which I've found to be a very sensitive, caring book. I would get that out of the library and it will introduce you to the basics.
The best thing to remember is that CC is a VERY disciplined approach, and is not in ANY way about letting your baby cry it out or get distressed or upset. It's quite regimented but if done properly should not get to a point where your baby is freaking out AT ALL.
I'd read as much as you can about it before starting it, because if you do it wrong it can be very damaging to your child.

We have started settling without the dummy and using it as an absolute last resort and on occassion she has gone down without it but now because it is last resort and not used often she falls asleep instantly when it touches her lips. Basically we put her down walk out, pat, out, pat, out, cuddle, out, dummy, out, dummy again and pat off to sleep. We started this on Friday at Tresillian and have found she has gone down without the dummy on several occassions and has only been patted off once. It's very effective, she's sleeping without her dummy right now! We're here for feeding and sleeping issues, but ditching the dummy even part time is an added bonus :)
