Hi

I really hope that this doesnt sound stupid but i have been confused about it since my daughter was born..

how do you count babies age??

By weeks.. eg. 4 weeks = 1 month
OR
do you count 1 month on the same date.. eg. 21st very month?

I usually go with the weeks way.. is this right? (so when my son is 24 weeks, he is 6 mmonths and we can start food.. we dont need to wait the extra nearly 2 weeks till the 30/31st of July???

Ta (hope i dont look too silly...:fingerscrossed: :D )

When dd was first born I counted weeks. eg. 4 weeks = 1 month. But as she got older I don't think it mattered so much...whats a few weeks in the scheme of things?? Plus it would just get to confusing.

I just counted in weeks for the first 12 weeks or so. I would say she was 12 weeks old. Then after that, I started counting in months, as in, she was months on the 22nd or each months. So she will be 11 months on the 22nd of this month.
Does that make sense?

You should really go by the date they were born if you are counting in months. As there is really an average of 4.3 weeks in a month. If you go by weeks then they willo be 1yr old before they really are....understand?
For the first couple of months of life, yes go by weeks but then go by months going off the date they were born.

I think that counting your babies age by weeks (as in, your baby is 4 weeks old, so you count them as 1 month old) is a bit silly. It doesn't add up.

There are 7 days in a week...so for four weeks, that's only 28 days. The only month that has that few days is February. The others have a few extra.

So, for example, I'll use my DD.

She was born on July 25. When she's 6 months old, (figuring out she's 6 months by using the 25th of each month)...well, it works out to 26.28 weeks of age.

However, if you do it by counting every 4 weeks, by the time I get to six lots of four (which, if I were using this method, I'd figure was 6 months) she'd be at 24 weeks. It's only 2.28 weeks difference...but it's a difference all the same.

I'd also like to add...In a year, there are 52 weeks. There are also 12 months in a year. It should go: weeks divided by 4 (because 4 weeks is said to = 1 month) = number of months in a year.

However, if you go: 52 (weeks in a year) divided by 4...the result is 13! Not 12, as it should be!

I think if count that, your logic is flawed.

I also went by weeks until ds was about 2 months old.

Then I calculated by months.

But when it came to solids the health nurse etc. recommend around 6 months babies should start solids and all babies should be eating solids at 6 months.

So for solids I used by the weeks calculation and baby's indications of readiness to commence solids and not months.

For my own personal use I have written in my diary for the year both the weekly dates and months, but when discussing ds age with anyone I use months.

It is all confusing and I guess personal preference.:)

SassyMummy you made my head spin! lol

I go by months, by the day they are born. Especially because thats what they need to go by for your babies needles.

I'd go by weeks until I had trouble remembering how many and then I'd go by months.

Then you get to my age and you have trouble remembering the years!
