Hi, my 5 month old son has begun waking/crying nearly every hour for the past week. He has been a great sleeper until now only waking once for a bottle. I think he might be teething so we gave him panadol and have also tried nurofen and he will sleep for 3 hrs but thats it. he is very unsettled, he throws himself around nearly all night. is this normal? is he going thru a phase?? he has a dummy so we put it in every time he cries but he can sleep without it so i dont think its the dummy anymore that is the problem.

It could be teeth. Otherwise maybe take him to the Dr? Does he have a temp?

My DS did this for a few days on and off and I took him to the Dr. and he said if its teeth it shouldn't last too much longer.

They do go through stages. Also around this age, they start to become quite clingy and want to be around Mum all the time. You may just have to be firm with him for a few days and he'll go back to sleeping well again (hopefully).

DD (6mo) was like this for the past 3 nights.

I thought it was the dummy.

But last night, automatically I put teething gel on before bed, and I didn't hear a peep from her until 4.30am.

And thinking about it my DS went through a similar stage at 5 months.

how interesting - my dd who just turned 5mths has started behaving really wierdly at nights too.

before, when i tuck her in bed abt 7.15/7.30pm, she would whimper a bit but go to sleep quite nicely on her own. the last 3-4 nights she has been screaming for about 30mins before going to sleep. about an hour later (probably after 1 sleep cycle), she wakes and screams for 10 seconds then goes back to sleep. she is still sleeping relatively well in the night however - wakes about 1/2am for a feed and the next time i hear from her is abt 6/7am.

i got some bonjela teething gel yesterday and used that to massage her gums - didn't seem to work, she still screamed her lungs out before bed. very clingy and very strange.

I buy the teething gel that the Women's and Childrens Hospital make, it's great stuff. Maybe suss if yours does the same thing?

My son has ALWAYS been like this going down at night. I have no idea why.. he's fine during the day. Just wakes up every 10 - 40 minutes for the first few hours at night.
