View Full Version : Tantrums have become very violent, Help.
My 2.5 year old DS had normal toddler tantrums that lasted only a couple of minutes and time out mats always worked. Since he became sick over a week ago, he has become extremely violent at DH and I without warning and the tantrum can last for almost an hour. He starts to try and bite me, hits and kicks me and pulls me hair and always tries to scratch my face. He has since started doing this at Daycare as well and they are concerns for everyone's safety.
Is this normal terrible two's or should I be consulting a paediatrician about it? The other concern is I am 6 months pregnant and can't handle him getting violent too close to my stomach (not that he aims for it intentionally)
I have read the books and tried holding him, getting down to his level, distractions, more time out and none of it seems to be working. How long does this stage last? Please help. :hair:

Have you tried an elimination diet? Maybe it's something in the food he's eating is affecting him. Unfortunately a 2 1/2 yr old prob won't respond to many behaviour modification techniques immediately but I would choose one strategy with DH and stick to it.
Is there a room in your house where he can't hurt himself that you can lock' him in until he calmes down. If you do use this method check on him every 5 mins or so and explain his actions, your reaction and exactly what is going to happen. ie"DS It really hurts me whan you scratch my face and hit me. you can spend some time in the quiet room while you calm down" or" throwing a tantrum isn't going to make me change my mind it will only make you feel angry and sad. I think you need to spend some time in the quiet room while you calm down."
I want to try a dietry change but I have no idea where to start. People tell me about preservatives and colourings etc but how do you know where to begin? The only thing he has eaten today is fruit, egg sandwich and cereal and we have already had two massive attacks today. Will a doctor give me advice on how to do an elimination diet?
A doctor will definitely give you advice on foods etc..
It might also be worth getting his ears checked. He might be having trouble hearing and could be getting frustrated. Is he still sick?
My DS has meltdowns like that too sometimes. He's very head strong and knows what he wants but sometimes can't get his point across to me.
It's frustrating for everyone. Good Luck. I hope you find something that helps

With an elimination diet you remove EVERYTHING thats not fruit, veg or rice for a good week or so and slowly add tings one at a time til yo find the culprit. His diet will be very boring for a while but if you find out whats causing the behaviour it'll be worth it. A dr is a good place to start or a Naturopath.
