So, are you a member? Have they helped you out at all?

I am so grateful for my strong union. I have called them many times

Yes indeedy. Come from a strong union family, I am very involved in the union and work in a strongly unionised work culture.

People would be horrified of the things the management have tried to do at times that the union has pulled them up on

DH and I are both members of our union.

They helped DH get his long service leave entitlments. DH wanted to take them in the peak of the veggie season and work had been on his back to take them. He wanted to take the time not to annoy them, but to have the time to go to court for his custody battle.

They came to the comprise of him having half the time off and getting the rest paid to him in cash.

DH is  We pay just over $500 a year, is that normal? Unions may not be perfect, but if they weren't there, who would stick up for the little guy?

I was there when they (being those not affiliated with the meeting or unionised but turned up anyhow) smashed the doors at parliament house .... we were mortified.
I have also met quite a few politicians with my work and have seen some unconciousable acts tried to be imposed on staff as a union delegate. I cannot count the amount of time I have spent in Industrial Relations court :o

Some unions pay a lot more... its mostly wage depending. It is tax deductable though.

ETA I think I pay about the same

No, but only because I don't think people in my profession (law) have a union. (it's got me thinking about it now) We have a society where we pay an annual membership fee, so it's probably a similiar idea.

I believe in unions, though.

My DH is, he works in a chicken factory.

He thinks it is 'suss' though, recently they had a vote on whether or not to allow a reduction in allowed breaks. Obviously everyone voted no, they did not want their number of breaks reduced. However, the change was passed... there was no increase in pay or anything like that, it was just a reduction in the number of breaks they are allowed. So why would anyone vote yes, they don't want as many breaks? They now have only a third of the breaks they had previously... allegedly this is what people voted for. I can't understand it, but chicken factory politics are beyond me i guess.

I have never belonged to a union, because I have never worked ina job covered by one.

However DH is a union rep, and I love that about him.

I believe very strongly in unions.
