View Full Version : Who buys the stuff they advertise on the morning shows??

Has anyone bought any of the products? What have you bought? Do they work like on TV? I am so curious about everything I see and always want it all but never buy anything. Today I want the Swivel Sweeper, and the thing that whitens your teeth, and the H2O mop...:D

Yes and everytime I'm tempted I tell myself "I will not buy stupid s**t off the tv"
I have the swivel sweeper
I love it
BUT the batteries only last 3 months and the replacement battery costs as much as a new swivel sweeper
I bought the knife sets that supposedly cut through a can or frozen steak
They don't even cut through a loaf of bread
Although my mum has bought some useful things
She loves the aerogarden
And she has the H20 mop however I haven't seen that in a while so I assume it's not as good as they convince you it is
I would recommend doing a google search on product reviews for the item in question before you buy
And then buy the item on ebay, so much cheaper :)
I was just wondering the same thing. There was a guy selling those Sham-wow things at the shopping centre the other day and they were going like hotcakes! DH wanted to get one just coz everyone else was (I didn't let him..lol.)

The ads are quite convincing.
I like the look of the H20 mop and the shamwow (could be scamwow though). But that would mean I would have to use them and clean the house.... not so keen anymore.
Also the exercise machines, expecially that big pilates one. But that would require me to do some exercise.... don't think so!

We thought about it and EVERYTHING we researched had bad feedback and everyone said they when they tied to send it back within the month they could never get through and when they did no one got back to them in time so they had to pay for the item.
I have those stay sharp knives and I think the steak knives are great I use them to cut everything. The bread knife is good too

Not a chance. Those shows are especially, particularly targeted towards the unemployed and SAHMs. Pretty much all they are is advertising. The selling is very clever, makes things look absolutely like the best thing since sliced bread, and are full of sweeteners such as 30-day money-back trials etc. All of the hidden nasties remain well-hidden and these companies are not in any way concerned with the customer, but making as much money as possible.
I have bought a couple of things in the past from infomercials, that I have been very happy with. But morning shows are merely a vehicle for bored, stay-at-home parents and others who want to brighten their life a little bit with products that seem like they will make things much easier, more convenient and just that little bit happier.
It makes me nauseous to watch those programmes in the mornings even for five minutes - they're like New Idea on TV, full of inane, mindless drivel and hard-sell pitches for hours on end, that insult the intelligence of women everywhere :barf:

No. I find those morning shows have just become basically advertising shows. They are always OTT marketing, promising ridiculous stuff. A friend bought a swivel sweeper and she said you have to empty it constantly and it broke after about 3 months.
Then there's the exercise equipment where they promise you'll drop a dress size in 10 days from using it 30 mins a day  It gives people false hope, and when it doesn't deliver it's promises people give up. Fitness is hard work, there's no secret but that, and claiming otherwise is unethical imo.

So many of the products use false advertising (IMO). Today I saw one for Sheer Cover, they showed a before and after of a woman with a dark blue tattoo. In the after the tattoo was completely invisible, no make-up was detectable. Then the women did a demo on the show, cover her mole on her arm, in the after shot the mole was still visible and looked caked with make-up.
All of the exercise machines look clumsy (in the footage made for the show rather than the American footage) for the people using them (so what happens when an overweight or ordinary person attempt it?).
I don't believe in that bench top oven thing that cooks in minutes from frozen etc.
If the products were any good they'd be available in shops.

That bench top oven thing the Flavourwave, has been around for years in other brands. My aunty has had one for years but it was about half the price of the TV one. So they do work, but the flavourwave is overpriced.
What about the Ped Eggs lol. When they first come out they wanted 50 bucks for them. They now sell identical ones (but different name) in go lo for 4 bucks LMAO. It's so gross how they show the skin shavings.

Really? 4 Bucks? I am going to get one then because I am fascinated by the Ped Egg. It was so disgusting I wanted it . The feet looked so nice afterward.
The Flavourwave scares me. I don't think food is meant to happen so fast.

Yep, 4 bucks at go lo in the beauty section ;) They also sell them at big w for about 10 or 12.
 at your comment about food not being meant to cook so quick. I know what you mean.

Yep i have an Easycook oven (like a flavourwave but an actual brand from the electrical store) Its great, it does cook frozen food, it does do everything. I cook pork chops in 20min and chicken breasts in 30min. Very good investment
Where did you find the pedegg things for cheap???

shops.
I have one of these not from the TV but I brought it for $100 from good guys and it is great!
I would never cook anything from frozen but as a turbo over it is the best thing and so easy to clean I love it
I have one of those stepper excercise machine things. The ones they have now have an arm bit too that twists side to side to do your upper torso, the one I have just has elastic band things you can pull up and down, while stepping. I didn't get it from TV, I got it from AMart, but I hate it anyway. Waste of money.
I tried proactiv once too, didn't like it, it basically just burnt off the top layer of my skin and bleached all my towels (has peroxide in it).
I'd love a shamwow, but I'd like to check it out in a shop. If they had them in the supermarket I'd probably buy one. I bought some stay sharp knives (not the same as the TV ones) that a lady was demonstrating in the supermarket and I LOVE them. They're amazing.

We have the Shamwow. We bought it after seeing it advertised late at night when we were both tired. Lol. But it looked like one of the few products that we thought was actually going to work - and it does. It's fantastic. We use one small one to dry DD's hair after her bath and it's incredible.
We use one of the large ones for our dogs after their baths - again, amazing.
My husband uses one when he goes cycling - he is a triathlete and a BIG sweater, and he said he's never had a towel as good.
For us - awesome product, not a waste of money at all.
My husband is also a personal trainer and is doing a Pilates instruction course. About a year ago, a friend of ours bought the Pilates reformer - and it's bloody fantastic. As soon as we saw hers, and how sturdy it is, well made and versatile, we decided to buy one too. Never looked back. It's the best money we've ever spent on something that big.
So yes, there are some products that are worth it in our opinion. But as soon as I see one of those morning shows I just switch off. Like I said before - an informercial is one thing, but a whole three-hour show dedicated to nothing but advertising is just yuk.

I bought some durable nonstick pots - Rockcoat - with a twelve month guarantee. After one month they had rusted so I sent them back and got a refund about three months later.

I bought a swivel sweeper but only because a friend of mine raves so much about hers. Haha I didn't actually know they were on the morning shows. And BTW, my friend's broke after 2yrs of constant use and they just replaced it free of charge!

I can't believe that about Proactive! Thats really bad. And to think sweet little Delta is promoting it. For shame

Yeah my DP uses proactive, so he can't use good (coloured) towels or pillow cases, because it bleaches them.
He's been using it for years though so I guess it doesn't bother him.
I want shamwow!!!

30-10-2009, 21:27
Proactiv didn't work for me but it did for a friend.
I had the same problem it bleached towels.
I felt really sick all the time while I was on it. I guess I must have been ingesting small amounts while washing my face with it.
I also worry as to what the long term effects are of using peroxide on your face. It will be interesting to see what proactive users look like in 10 years.
Anyways it didn't work for me anyway so I gave my last batch away and called the order.
I had bad acne until I was 28, fell pregnant and it's been gone ever since :smiliedance:
It's fairly pricey though, I'd be shopping around before getting sucked in by another infomerical again

Part of the reason we bought the Shamwow was because the ad was so freakin' funny. He's a natural, that bloke.
AO. It's so gross how they show the skin shavings.
EVERYTIME I see the Ped Egg infomercial I cringe when I see the skin shavings....it's so gross :barf:
But it did make me want one...though I didn't succumb! Thank goodness now people are saying you can buy them for $4 at Go Lo!!!!

I admit, I checked out the rapid detox site :o No where on the site, is there a price. Lots of 'get the first month free to try' flashing links but no price. You have to ring the company, which sends up warning bells for me. It's obviously overpriced and the salespeople are there to pressure you

I secretly wanted a Snuggie. Didn't get one though. I wanted a red one to look like a monk. My friend got a fawn coloured one at a sale. His wife said he looked like Obi Wan Kenobi in it

I wouldn't touch the aussie proactive, the american one is actually different... did work brilliantly for a friend of mine for almost 2 years though, then her skin got used to it and she hasn't been able to find anything else that works.
Will admit that I definately want zumba... I even want the stupid toning sticks - they're just 1kg weights with stupid maracas attached... they're only going to annoy me. BUT I WANT IT STILL!!!

Yeah, but to get the free trial of lots of these sorts of things, you have to pay the small postage fee- usually under $5. Then a week or so later when it has gone through no problem and you aren't looking, you start getting mystery credit card charges. $74, then $52. They got me for $126 before I realised. Be very careful with free trials! The bank told me that once they have your all your details, even if they are blocked, they will just use some other dodgy company to bill your credit card. I had to close my whole bank account to stop getting ripped off. Grrrr Be very careful with free trials or anything that asks you to pay a small fee. Only yesterday I wanted to try something that wanted a small fee. I contacted them and said that I didn't have a credit card, but could direct debit, paypal or wire transfer. The sent me info on where to get a credit card, without credit checks etc. DODGY. Needless to say, no trial.
